Specialty
Anesthesiology
Position Type
Permanent
The translational research instructor position is open to BC/BE anesthesiology residency graduates with excellent clinical qualifications and strong interpersonal and social skills. This physician will also serve as an attending anesthesiologist at Duke University Medical Center. There is a preference for applicants with an interest in neuroscience and anesthesia research; prior research experience is helpful but not required. This is a 1-year position, which will provide significant academic/research development and training to help instructors prepare for a regular rank faculty position.

The translational research instructor will involve serving as an attending anesthesiologist for surgical cases in the main Duke University Hospital operating rooms for 1 day per week, and completing translational research training the other 4 days per week.

The translational research training will occur within the NIH-funded research team of Dr. Miles Berger, which uses a multidisciplinary approach to understand brain-level mechanisms of postoperative delirium and cognitive dysfunction. The translational research instructor will thus gain significant experience in performing invasive procedures (such as lumbar punctures to obtain CSF) in awake, non-sedated older adults. The instructor will also obtain significant training in scientific writing for both scientific manuscripts and grants, and we expect that they will serve as a co-author on several publications from work completed during this year.

Interested individuals should submit their CV, Anesthesiology In-Training Exam (ITE) scores, and 3 recommendation letters (from anesthesiologists that they have worked with clinically on a frequent basis during their residency).
