BASIC FUNCTION:

Plans, directs and implements radiation therapy physics projects and patient treatment plans. Responsible for Q.A. programs and regulatory compliance in the Department of Radiation Oncology.

SUPERVISORYACCOUNTABILITY:
Supervises, hires, trains, disciplines and evaluates the performance of staff physicist and dosimetrists.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Proven ability to direct and perform independent work, including treatment planning, photon and electron dosimetry, quality assurance, electronics, electromechanical design.
PRINCIPALACCOUNTABILITIES:

Responsible for working in a safe and protective manner at all times keeping in mind that safety and environmental hazards are the responsibility of all employees for themselves, other staff members and patients. Capable of providing leadership in an independent setting, should be able to work with, communicate effectively, and to interact with physicians, technologists, administration, engineering personnel, equipment manufacturers and with other scientists in the Medical Physics field. Establish policies and procedures in accordance with the objectives of the Department of Radiation Oncology.

CORE COMPETENCIES:

Provide direction and scientific leadership to the Medical Physics Section in the

Department of Radiation Oncology.

Develop specifications, acceptance testing, evaluation, commissioning, calibration, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting of radiation producing and monitoring equipment, associated computers and radiation

Assure and document the calibration and safety of radiological equipment.

Establish policies and procedures to provide quality patient care in the administration of radiation.

Direct the development and implementation of quality control in the clinical use of radiation.

Plan, direct and perform development and testing of new devices and techniques for quality patient care.

Plan, direct and carry out radiation treatment simulations and dosimetry measurements.

Maintain dosimetry standards in accordance with national protocols.
Participate in departmental planning, specification and purchasing of radiotherapy equipment and perform its acceptance and operational testing and evaluation.
Participate in teaching and continuing education for physicians, technologists and other staff.

Participate in institutional meetings regarding:a) radiation safety,) quality control, c) cancer committee, d) education and research, e) publications.
Review, modify or establish new techniques for the accurate administration of radiation to anatomical sites specific to a variety of diseases in collaboration with the Radiation Oncologist and in coordination with the technical staff.

Develops treatment plans, performs Q.A. tests and supervises the administration of treatments including, but not limited to

3D conformal and IMRT external beam;

Stereotactic radiosurgery and fractionated stereotatic radiosurgery.

Temporary and permanent brachytherapy.

Design custom accessories to the radiotherapy equipment to improve effectiveness and accuracy.

Study and evaluate modern radiotherapy techniques for treatment of malignant or benign clinical conditions for implementation in the Radiation Oncology Department.

Design and direct experiments and measurements to verify the accuracy of radiation delivery to patients.

Provide dose computations for individual treatment planning.

Establish and carry out programs in dosimetry, quality assurance and maintenance of operational parameters of high energy linear accelerators and other radiation therapy equipment.

Maintain records to serve administrative and legal requirements of the
Physics Section in the Department.

Provide guidance and instruction in physics and in treatment planning and assist in maintaining and updating the educational level of the clinical and technical staff.
Provide technical guidance to the Chairman of Radiation Oncology on the purchase and specifications of radiotherapy equipment and the implementation of new clinical techniques.
Represent the Department with manufacturers, vendors and their engineering representatives.

Plan and direct specific projects, as needed, for the clinical or research aspects of Radiation Oncology.

Serve as Physics Advisor and liaison with other clinical departments in the hospital.

Perform related duties, as required.

MINIMUMREQUIREMENTS:

A scientific academic background at the Ph.D. level, post-doctoral experience, and qualify for academic appointment at the professorial level.Ph.D. in Physics is preferred.
A minimum of five years' experience in the practice of Medical Physics.Certification by the American Board of Medical Physics in Radiation Oncology Physics, or by the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiological Physics is required.
