Lexington Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program Program Director
The Program Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program is responsible for the leadership, organization, operation, and general administration of the Family Medicine Residency Program sponsored by Lexington Medical Center (LMC). The Program Director establishes the strategic direction of the program and is responsible for the standards, quality, and reputation of the program. The Program Director is expected to integrate the Family Medicine Residency Program (FMRP) with physician practices and hospital clinical services in a manner that enhances value and quality, and promotes an optimal environment for professional practice
Compensation Outline:
- Beginning September 1, 2021, the Program Director salary will be a composite of administrative duties as outlined above, personally performed clinical work, and duties as assigned by the Chief Medical Officer and/or the Designated Institutional Officer.
- The Program Director is responsible for the site visit by the ACGME as well as all other elements to ensure a successful initial application and maintenance of a FMRP.
- Beginning September 1, 2021, an annual continuing medical education (CME) budget will be allocated for Program Directors for leadership or administrative development opportunities at their discretion.
The duties of the family medicine program director will include, but are not limited to:
- Oversee and accountable for all operations of the Family Medicine Residency Program to ensure a stable and high performing quality training program.
- Develop a program budget and oversee budget execution under supervision of the DIO.
- Participate in competency evaluations of residents and faculty.
- Recruit and select candidates for the residency program through the National Residency Matching Program.
- Ensure the quality of didactic and clinical education by all preceptors at all sites of the FMRP.
- Select qualified Family Medicine physicians and other specialists to serve on the program faculty.
- Appoint local directors at the participating site(s) who are accountable for resident education (as needed).
- Ensure that the program does not place excessive reliance on residents for service as opposed to education.
- Maintain active clinical practice, typically in Family Medicine or one of the subspecialties of Family Medicine.
- Ensure institutional policies and procedures are adhered to by residents and faculty.
- Oversee compliance with ACGME program requirements and report non-compliance promptly in collaboration with the Designated Institutional Official.
- Fulfill all duties as a program director specified in the ACGME program requirements, including oversight of data entry into the Accreditation Data System, evaluating quality of resident education experiences, monitoring duty hours and fatigue, providing residents feedback, and improving program with input from resident and faculty surveys.
- Develop curriculum, policies, and procedures for the program
- Perform annual program evaluation and residency clinical competency assessments.
- Serve on the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) to formulate institutional policy involving resident supervision, transitions of care, patient safety, professionalism, and quality improvement.
- Serve on committees as requested by the DIO, Chief Medical Officer, and/or Chief Executive Officer.
- Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Supervise the Family Medicine Program Coordinator and Core Faculty.
Qualifications
The Program Director must:
- Have at least five years of clinical experience in Family Medicine at an ACGME-Accredited Family Medicine Residency Program training location, with three years of documented leadership/administrative experiences as an Associate Program Director or Core Faculty member) within an ACGME-Accredited Family Medicine Residency Program.
- After July 2023,
- Dedicate a majority of his or her time (at least 32 hours per week) to program administration, evaluation, teaching, resident precepting, and scholarship.
- Dedicate remaining time to direct patient care without the presence of residents.
- Prior to July 2023,
- Dedicate 40 percent of his or her time (at least 16 hours per week) to program development, application, coordination of teaching, interviewing/recruitment of residents, and scholarship.
- Dedicate remaining 60 percent of time to direct patient care without the presence of residents.
- Be board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine
- Must be appointed and remain in good standing to the LMC Medical Staff.
- Have unrestricted credentials within the Department of Family Medicine of LMC and be licensed to practice medicine by the State of South Carolina.
- Demonstrate clinical competence as a practicing physician.
Strongly preferred characteristics in the Program Director include:
- Currently serves (or has no less than three years’ experience within the last seven years) as a
- Program Director or an Assistant Program Director of an ACGME-Accredited Family Medicine Residency Program.
- Leadership role in an AAMC or AACOM Medical School
- Currently possesses a masters level degree (MPH, MBA, MHA, M.Ed)
- Recent scholarly activity such as peer reviewed funding, publication of original research or review articles in peer-reviewed journals, chapters in textbooks, publication or presentation of case reports or clinical series at scientific society meetings, or participation in national committees or educations organizations.
