Job Summary

The Anesthesia Medical Director, Informatics will be responsible for improving the quality, safety, usability, and affordability of care in their area through the effective design, implementation and optimization of information technology. This person will help define and execute the vision for optimizing the clinical use of applications, with focus on the Epic Anesthesia module, and localize where appropriate for their area and overlapping enterprise needs. The ITD medical director will liaise between leadership, infrastructure designers, information technology analysts, managers and product owners, and the clinical users of electronic health record (EHR) and other systems to ensure that clinical data is available, and that resources and tools meet the needs of patients, physicians, clinical staff and operational stakeholders. She/he will represent their stakeholders' interests as it relates to enterprise wide decision making. The ITD medical director will help achieve optimal EHR and clinical applications build, training and support for clinical end users through the use of data driven processes, including objective efficiency data and qualitative data related to end user experience. She/he will also optimize the ability of the EHR and other clinical applications to capture data for the purpose of analysis, clinical improvement efforts, and clinical decision support to drive standard workflows across the enterprise. This ITD medical director, informatics role is under the direction of the CCHS Enterprise Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) and supports system objectives for quality and safety, clinical initiatives and clinical research, and prioritizes tasks to accomplish these aforementioned goals.

Reporting Structure

The ITD Medical Director will have a dual reporting structure. The informatics portion of this role will report into the Office of the CMIO (this office includes the Enterprise CMIO, Associate CMIO and Medical Directors, Informatics).

This role will required continued clinical practice and for that portion of the role the ITD medical director, informatics will report to the clinical chair of the appropriate clinical institute as it relates to the candidate's clinical practice.

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Serve as the clinical informatics expert for the identified area of responsibility, helping manage key risks, issues, and escalations. In collaboration with ITD, the Office of the CMIO and the organization, this role will represent the clinical informatics needs of their current area as it relates to people, process, and technologies, while helping ensure an integrated and standardized informatics build across the enterprise where possible.
  • Support Office of the CMIO in developing and attaining mutually accepted goals for ITD as they relate to the clinical use of the EHR and other clinical applications with a focus on safety, quality, usability, affordability, and standardization where possible, while aligning with CCHS's overall strategic plan
  • Participate in the development and execution of a localized strategy regarding the optimal design, implementation and use of the EHR and other clinical applications, that aligns with CCHS enterprise mission, vision, and overall strategic goals
  • Engage stakeholders including clinical leaders, executive management and ITD to ensure strategic and tactical alignment of HIT systems with clinical and organizational needs
  • Collaborate across departments and serve as the clinical informatics expert for their area and liaise with the various enterprise committees, individual caregivers, ITD and operational leadership, and other stakeholders regarding the use of HIT to support the CCHS mission and vision
  • Use quantitative and qualitative data to evaluate the impact of HIT solutions on clinical care processes and identify areas of opportunity to promote use of technology to create efficiencies for clinicians and improve quality of care
  • Set and oversee the execution of tactics in support of clinical content strategy across her/his area of responsibility, including ensuring on-going communication with all key stakeholders and clinical end users
  • Incorporate key learnings attained from staff/physician input, site visits and workflow observations into design, optimization, and enhancement solutions, with the goal of improving the patient and provider experience and the safety and quality of care that is provided through the use of HIT
  • Participate in the development and review of training materials and methodologies related to the use of the EHR and other clinical applications. While this will be mainly related to the clinical use, broader involvement is expected as needed. Partner with the training team to help coordinate day- to-day health informatics training and at-the-elbow support activities across the clinical care setting.
  • Collaborate with key operational quality, safety and analytics stakeholders to develop various structured data elements in clinical applications. Work on cross-functional teams to develop novel methods of analyzing and presenting data.
  • Be knowledgeable of and stay up to date on clinical informatics trends, emerging technologies, experiences and approaches and help ensure that the Cleveland Clinic remains in line with global trends in medicine, informatics and HIT
  • Support accreditation, audit and other compliance activities related to the clinical use of the EHR
  • Participate on and partner on leading healthcare information technology (HIT) related provider advisory groups (PAGS) and help assure appropriate clinical representation on these groups.
  • Provide expertise and support for multi-faceted clinical informatics projects
  • Assist in gathering, managing and prioritizing clinical users' IT enhancement/change requests for appropriate resource allocation of build teams, while ensuring that correct intake and prioritization processes are followed
  • Help develop CCF's clinical care informatics expertise (specialized expertise that crosses technology and clinical workflows)
  • Participate in recruitment and retention of talented clinical informaticists and ITD caregivers as the need arises

Education/Certification/Licensure

MD or DO is required and applicant must be able to obtain a medical license in the state where they will be practicing. Applicant must hold a primary board certification.

Applicant must have or obtain ITIL Foundations certifications within 6 months of job initiation

Experience:
  • At least a year of involvement in clinical informatics activities, such as informatics related committees, provider advisory groups, or informatics projects. Alternatively, candidates who have completed (or are anticipated to complete) 24 months of an ACGME approved clinical informatics fellowship will be considered.
  • Experience leveraging/integrating/implementing technology advances with an EHR to improve services and daily operations. Experience with Epic, including configurability, build, design, and functionality, is strongly preferred.
  • Preferably, candidate would have some experience with implementation and optimization of clinical care information systems and processes that impact patient safety, quality improvement, or provider satisfaction.
  • Experience in working closely with internal EHR training teams to develop various curriculum courses for pre-Go Live, Post-Go Live and ongoing optimization and upgrading training documentation and materials

Knowledge
  • Excellent understanding of utilizing electronic health record (EHR) technology to positively transform clinical practice by improving the quality of patient care, reducing costs and driving user satisfaction across the care continuum
  • Working knowledge of the EHR implementation process including workflow design
  • Knowledge regarding the potential impact of various regulatory and compliance guidelines on decision making ie. Stark, HIPAA, etc.
  • General understanding and appreciation of software User Interface (UI) design and user experience (UX).
  • General knowledge of, or exposure to, project management methodologies ie. Agile, Waterfall, etc.
  • Basic understanding of change management concepts and strategies, as it relates to physician adoption of new technologies
  • General understanding of health information exchange (HIE) , Health Level 7 (HL7), and Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standards to ensure interoperability, usability, data exchange and analytics
