Denver Health & Hospital | Associate EMS Medical Director

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Denver Health is recruiting a full-time academic emergency physician to join as an Associate EMS Medical Director. Currently, we are particularly looking to expand in the areas of EMS education and operational medical direction, with significant potential for future progression in leadership within the Division. Our highly-functioning and established EMS team consists of the Paramedic Division Medical Director and three associate directors work collaboratively to provide medical direction to over 250 divisional paramedics, as well as to Denver Fire, Denver Police, Denver 911 Communications Center, and the Denver Health Paramedic School. As such, our recruitment will place a strong emphasis on teamwork. Denver’s EMS system provides a two-tiered response for emergent calls, with Denver Fire providing the BLS response and Denver Paramedics providing the ALS response and transport. Within this system, Denver Paramedics respond to approximately 120,000 calls per year with roughly 75,000 transports. Finally, our system also staffs City and County Special Events and Denver NFL and MBL games.

The emergency department (ED) at Denver Health includes a 44-bed adult ED with an additional 19-bed pediatric ED and urgent care, a 13-bed fast track area, and an adjacent 23-bed clinical decision unit. With a combined annual census of more than 100,000 patients, the ED at Denver Health is the second busiest in Colorado and home to the Ernest E. Moore Shock Trauma Center at Denver Health, the primary trauma referral center for the Rocky Mountain Region. Additionally, the acuity managed by the adult ED is high, with a 25% admission rate. Staffing in the adult and pediatric EDs is provided by board-certified emergency physicians, PGY 1- 4 residents, emergency medicine subspecialty fellows, and advanced practice providers. Strong and extremely collaborative relationships exist among physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing, and consultative services.

Faculty hold appointments in the School of Medicine and ultimately report to the Director of Service for the Department of Emergency Medicine at Denver Health.

The ideal candidate will be committed to serving our patient population and have a passion for innovation and scholarship. Fellowship and an academic track record are strongly preferred. Board eligibility or certification in emergency medicine is required.
