The University of Chicago's Department of Surgery is searching for a full-time physician scientist faculty member at any rank. The Surgeon and Director of Surgical Health Services Research will be responsible for developing an interdisciplinary strategy for the Department and will lead efforts to grow, promote, and support clinical research and scholarship.

The appointee will collaborate with other members of the department to further the research outcomes and obtain investigator-initiated trials. The current portfolio includes active cancer, pancreatic disease, trauma/critical care, tissue engineering, microbiome sciences, and transplant biology across all organs (liver, heart, lung, kidney), and other related areas.

We welcome individuals with peer reviewed research portfolios with funding attributable to NIH grants and/or the ability to secure extramural funding. The appointee will have inpatient and outpatient responsibilities in their area of specialty.

Compensation, academic rank, and tenure are dependent upon qualifications; the position includes a generous package of fringe benefits.

The Department of Surgery has a rich history of basic and translation science in cancer research, infection pathogenesis, transplant immunology, the molecular physiology of cardiac disease, epithelial and vascular biology as it relates to surgical pathology and clinical outcomes research.

Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must (1) have completed a doctorate or equivalent (2) be board certified or eligible by the American Board of Surgery and pertinent subspecialty, if applicable (or equivalent), (3) have completed an accredited fellowship or equivalent training in their respective area of practice and be able to obtain permanent and unrestricted Illinois licensure.
