Division of Intramural Research

Perinatology Research Branch

Senior Investigator/Physician Scientist

The Perinatology Research Branch (PRB)/Division of Obstetrics and Maternal-Fetal Medicine of the Intramural Program of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development is seeking a full-time board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist with a subspecialty in Maternal-Fetal Medicine to serve as Deputy Branch Chief.

The PRB is the only clinical branch in the Intramural Program of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which focuses its clinical and translational research on human pregnancy. The PRB conducts original research in the major obstetrical syndromes responsible for the excessive rate of infant mortality such as preterm labor, preterm prelabor rupture of membranes, preeclampsia, fetal growth disorders, fetal death, and congenital anomalies. The Branch also studies causes of maternal morbidity and mortality such as clinical chorioamnionitis, sepsis, and amniotic fluid embolism. The clinical operations of the Branch consist of a Prenatal Clinic, Intrapartum unit, Fetal Imaging (ultrasound and MRI), and Fetal Cardiology. The laboratories include molecular microbiology, perinatal immunology, placental pathology, and biomarker discovery. The PRB co-sponsors with Wayne State University and the Detroit Medical Center an ACGME accredited training program in Maternal-Fetal Medicine, which also offers a combined Fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Genetics.

Outstanding individuals with demonstrated interests in research in pregnancy with a track record of scholarly activity are invited to apply. The applicant must be board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and should be able to assist the Branch Chief with the oversight of a complex, multidisciplinary research program with the ability to collaborate within the PRB and with other Institutions. The candidate should be able to assist in the training and mentoring of faculty and Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellows. The individual selected for this position is expected to support a dynamic and productive research program and make use of the excellent opportunities for collaborative translational and high-risk/high-reward science.

The Program is currently housed in Detroit, Michigan at the Wayne State University campus and the Detroit Medical Center, where it has been located for more than two decades. Continued success of the Program depends on a collaborative relationship with the Medical Center where primarily underserved pregnant patients seek care, as well as with the faculty, residents, students, and staff of the Medical School.

The incumbent will be eligible for a tenured appointment at a salary commensurate with his/her credentials and experience. Full federal government benefits will be provided, including leave, health and life insurance, long-term care insurance, retirement plan, and savings plan (401k equivalent). Selected candidate may qualify for relocation benfits in accordance with agency policy.

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter describing professional training and experience in leadership, management, administration, professional service, and mentoring and outreach activities (especially those involving women and persons from racial/ethnic or other groups that are underrepresented in biomedical research); statement of research interests; brief (2-3 pages) vision statement for the Branch; and the names, affiliations, and contact details for three references (who will only be contacted following an interview). Please email these materials as one package to:
