THE POSITION:  The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), a component  of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Assistant Director, Scientific Strategy and Innovation. NHLBI is a national and international leader in heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders. The Assistant Director position offers an exciting opportunity for scientific and managerial leadership in supporting the Director, NHLBI strategically by coordinating the scientific priorities of the NHLBI and ensuring that priorities and plans are executed and supported through the business management and administrative functions of the Institute.

Responsibilities will include: providing authoritative leadership, including policy development and program management, in cross-cutting, trans-Institute research programs developed to improve health outcomes in heart, lung, and blood diseases and sleep disorders; ensuring alignment with the Director’s vision; initiating, catalyzing and supporting innovative programmatic initiatives; advising and assisting the NHLBI Director, Executive Officer, Intramural and Extramural Division Directors, and other key officials on all attributes of the mission, activities, and functions of the Office of the Director; and serving as the chief advisor to the Director on a wide range of complex and emerging issues that affect the direction and scope of the NHLBI’s daily and strategic operations.

LOCATION:  Bethesda, Maryland 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: The NHLBI seeks candidates who have a commitment to scientific excellence and the energy, enthusiasm, and innovative thinking necessary to lead a dynamic and diverse organization. Applicants must possess a doctoral level degree in health or allied sciences as well as research experience, management experience, interpersonal skills, and the ability to engage stakeholders. The ideal candidate will be a leader who has demonstrated experience in setting, planning, implementing, and analyzing program objectives and priorities and should have the demonstrated ability to manage financial and human resources and coordinate a research portfolio involving extensive internal and external collaboration. This position will be filled under a Title 42 (f) excepted service appointment.

SALARY/BENEFITS: The Assistant Director, Scientific Strategy and Innovation will be appointed at a salary commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience. A recruitment or relocation bonus may be available, and relocation expenses may be paid. Full Federal benefits, including leave, health and life insurance, long term care insurance, retirement, and savings plan (401K equivalent) will be provided. The successful candidate is subject to a background investigation and public financial disclosure report prior to the effective date of the appointment.
