Division Chief

Division of Rheumatology, Department of Internal Medicine

University of Utah School of Medicine

The University of Utah School of Medicine seeks qualified applicants to lead an academic Rheumatology Division with an accomplished faculty and opportunities for growth in the clinical, research, and educational missions. This is an exceptional position for an experienced academician who has aspirations to lead a vibrant Division.

The Division of Rheumatology is dedicated to delivering high quality, value-driven patient care. Twenty-nine clinicians provide outpatient services and inpatient consultations at five locations in the Salt Lake Valley, including the University of Utah Hospital, the George E. Wahlen Veterans Affairs Hospital, and community clinics. The Division serves a large geographic area in the Intermountain West with general rheumatology clinics and subspecialty clinics tailored specifically to patients with vasculitis, systemic sclerosis, psoriatic arthritis, spondyloarthritis, immunotherapy-induced rheumatic disease, juvenile to adult transitions, gout, and glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. There is a strong tradition of interdisciplinary care for patients with complex chronic diseases, and rheumatologists conduct combined clinics with pulmonologists, dermatologists, endocrinologists, orthopedists, and primary care providers. The Division of Rheumatology and Department of Internal Medicine have experienced consistent clinical growth for several years. University of Utah Health ranked in the top 10 of the prestigious Vizient Quality Leadership Award for the last 11 years.

The University of Utah is a Top-Tier 1 research university and member of the Association of American Universities. Research funding exceeded $600 million in 2020. Its research community is highly collaborative across 18 colleges, 35 interdisciplinary programs, and 100 academic departments and divisions.

Applicants can expect resources to expand research in the Division of Rheumatology. The Division is recognized both nationally and internationally for contributions and expertise in inception, design, and conduct of clinical trials. With advances in health information technology, registry research is integrated with routine clinical care, and the Division has rapidly expanding data resources with extensive clinical data and biospecimens. The Division partners with basic and translational researchers in the University-wide Immunology, Inflammation, and Infectious Disease (3i) Initiative. Rheumatology investigators also collaborate with experts in epidemiology, bioinformatics, and genetics to improve early disease identification, management strategies, health care delivery, and biomarkers. The University of Utah also has a premier genetics program with access to a state-wide genealogy database that is linked to electronic medical records.

In addition to patient care and research, the Division provides training to five fellows through a competitive, accredited Fellowship Program. The University of Utah offers excellent graduate programs for training PhD and MD/PhD students, and a physician-scientist training program (PSTP) for internal medicine residents. The Division is also committed to advancing junior faculty within programs such as the Vice President's Clinical and Translational (VPCAT) Research and the Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI).

The successful candidate will be a practicing rheumatologist with a national reputation reflecting a strong record of federal funding, scholarly accomplishments, clinical leadership, and progressive administrative experience. Demonstration of leadership capacity and ability to communicate effectively are essential. The position will entail engagement with individuals representing multiple disciplines across a variety of operational and investigative roles. There will be abundant opportunities and resources to enhance and increase the Division’s research enterprise.

Candidates should qualify for the appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level on the Tenure Track at the University of Utah, must be board certified in Rheumatology, and must be eligible for a renewable medical license in the State of Utah. Review begins immediately, continuing until the position is filled or the search is closed.
