The Department of Pediatrics in the Duke University School of Medicine is seeking a physician at the Associate Professor or Professor level to serve as Chief for the Division of Emergency Medicine. Proven leadership and excellence in clinical care, education, research and administrative experience are required. Candidates must have a Doctorate of Medicine (or equivalent) and be board-certified in Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM). Candidates must also have or be eligible for a North Carolina medical license.

Priorities for the Division Chief of Emergency Medicine include developing innovative patient programs, mentoring trainees, including medical students and residents and enhancing research programs. The division currently includes eight faculty. Their academic interests include quality improvement, preclinical and clinical medical education, ultrasound, simulation, procedural sedation and global health. Physician training at the resident and medical student levels is an integral and essential component of the division's mission. All faculty excel at bedside teaching, and the division has been repeatedly honored with the Arena-Palumbo Division Teaching Award from the graduating Pediatrics and Medicine-Pediatrics residents.

Faculty work closely with emergency medicine (EM) faculty in the Division of Emergency Medicine which is currently a Division of the department of Surgery. PEM faculty play a significant role in the training of EM residents. Emergency Medicine has worked hard to create a robust clinical research infrastructure within the Emergency Department that to date PEM faculty have underutilized.

The Division of Emergency Medicine is in a period of expansion which in turns represents opportunity for a new leader. We are expanding our coverage model and are hiring new faculty. We are exploring options for beginning a PEM fellowship. We will likely move into a new PED in the 3-5 year time frame.

The Department of Pediatrics at Duke has a long history of excellence in patient care, graduate and undergraduate medical education, and clinical, laboratory and health services research.
