The Department of Pediatrics in the Duke University School of Medicine is seeking a physician at the Associate Professor or Professor level to serve as Chief of the Division of Rheumatology. Proven leadership and excellence in clinical care, education, research and administrative experience are required. Candidates must have a Doctorate of Medicine (or equivalent) and be board-certified in Pediatric Rheumatology. Candidates must also have or be eligible for a North Carolina medical license.

Priorities for the Division Chief of Rheumatology include developing innovative patient programs, mentoring trainees, including medical students and residents and enhancing research programs. The division currently includes nine board-certified faculty. Our faculty and fellows are dedicated to providing high-quality, comprehensive care for infants, children, and adolescents with rheumatic diseases on the inpatient ward and in daily outpatient clinics at Duke Children's Hospital & Health Center, Lenox Baker Children's Hospital, and Duke Children's Specialty Services of Brier Creek. Because rheumatic diseases are complex and can often affect multiple organ systems, the division works closely with subspecialists throughout the medical center to provide expert consultation and state-of-the-art approaches to patient management. Our clinical staff includes nurse clinicians, an occupational therapist, physical therapist, clinical social worker, clinical research coordinator, and clinical trials manager.

Duke pediatric rheumatology currently offers six interdisciplinary clinics, including an autoimmune brain disease clinic, lupus clinic, myositis clinic, uveitis clinic, young adult rheumatology, and sedated joint injection clinic. Notably, our myositis clinic has been designated as one of four national JM Centers of Excellence by the Cure JM Foundation.

Physician training at the resident and medical student levels is an integral and essential component of the division's mission, and all faculty excel at bedside teaching. We have a robust three-year fellowship program that is fully accredited by the American Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). We have also been leaders in training Medicine/Pediatrics Rheumatologists. Our educational goals are to train the future physician-scientists and academic leaders in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic rheumatic diseases, fund young researchers working in clinical and patient-oriented research, and train physicians in family-based, patient-centered clinical services.

The Division of Pediatric Rheumatology is actively engaged in clinical research to improve the care of children with rheumatic disease by addressing critical knowledge gaps. Ongoing studies strive to improve diagnosis and evaluation of disease activity, compare the effectiveness of treatment strategies, and investigate the psychosocial impact of chronic disease. We currently have active clinical trials in systemic juvenile arthritis, polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, juvenile dermatomyositis, pediatric scleroderma, inflammatory eye disease, and drug safety. We have been leaders in the Childhood Arthritis Research and Rheumatology Alliance (CARRA).
