Cleveland Clinic, a distinguished academic healthcare system, announces its search for the Chair of the Digestive Disease & Surgery Institute (DDSI), a flagship program in our health system located in Northeast Ohio.

DDSI encompasses the Departments of Colorectal Surgery, Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition, and General Surgery. The mission of the Institute is to be the international leader in medical and surgical treatment of digestive and surgical disease by providing the highest quality international clinical care, research and education enterprise-wide for patients with digestive disease and surgical disease, in the most efficient manner, with the best team. The Institute is currently ranked 3rd in U.S. News and World Report for Gastroenterology and GI Surgery. DDSI is the largest Surgical Institute at Cleveland Clinic in both the number of surgeons and volume.

DDSI is comprised of 201 staff physicians, 92 advanced practice providers, 426 inpatient and outpatient nurses, 105 registered dieticians, and 424 additional non-clinical caregivers. Across Northeast Ohio, the Institute performs surgery at all 11 Cleveland Clinic hospitals and provides services at 32 outpatient locations. DDSI performs endoscopy at 22 locations across Northeast Ohio including: Main Campus and Regional Hospitals, Ambulatory Surgery Centers, and Ambulatory Endoscopy Centers. The Institute partners closely with the Digestive Disease teams at Cleveland Clinic Florida and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. In 2019, DDSI's volume consisted of approximately 158,000 patient visits, 51,000 surgical cases, 96,600 endoscopic procedures, and 13,900 admissions.

DDSI has a significant educational and research impact to the health system. There are 140 residents and fellows under the Institute. DDSI has 20 training programs of which 11 are surgery programs and 9 are medicine programs. DDSI currently has $60 million in research funding which consists of $35 million internal funding and $25 million external funding. In 2019, the Institute had 425 IRB-approved research studies and over 700 publications.

The Institute Chair will be a General Surgeon, Colorectal Surgeon or Gastroenterologist physician leader with impressive credentials who reports to the Cleveland Clinic Chief of Staff and can implement and drive the strategic mission of the Cleveland Clinic Health System. The ideal candidate must have a record of excellence in clinical care, education and scholarship as well as significant experience in leadership, administration and program development. The Institute Chair will be a demonstrated leader with strength in communication and collaboration both within and outside of the Institute. Duties and responsibilities of the new Institute Chair will be to provide leadership for the Institute which will include oversight of general operations, quality and safety, recruitment, retention and mentoring of medical staff, administrators, educators and researchers.
