Job Details

The Department of Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) is searching for a dynamic, experienced, future-oriented academic general internist to become the new Chief of the Section of General Internal Medicine (GIM). The new Section Chief will lead GIM's ambulatory clinical operations, which provide a variety of outstanding ambulatory services at Dartmouth-Hitchcock in Lebanon, NH including longitudinal primary care for patients with common or complex medical conditions, episodic acute care, geriatric care, and several outpatient consultative services. The new Chief will also serve as a mentor to members of the Section who provide extensive teaching in ambulatory medicine to medical students from our partner the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, and for our excellent medical residents. The new Chief will also mentor faculty and trainees as they develop areas of personal academic and scholarly interest, and will foster a culture of scholarship and innovation within the Section.

The Section of General Internal Medicine is a pivotal section within the Department of Medicine. It provides longitudinal primary care and a "medical home" for many residents of our region, as well as consultative services in a variety of related areas, including geriatrics, complex medical patients, patients under the care of multiple subspecialty services, patients requiring pre-operative assessments, and sick post-surgical patients immediately after discharge. Our general internists are the critical entry point for many patients as they interact with the subspecialists of our large and nationally known and ranked academic medical center, which in turn has very close partnering relationships with the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, and the VA Medical Center in White River Junction, VT.

This section has a total of 21 physicians, 11 advanced practice professionals (nurse practitioners and physician assistants), 2 certified social workers providing collaborative mental health services, and a dedicated team of nurses, medical assistants and administrative personnel. The chief collaborates with a Practice Manager and Nurse Manager to lead and manage clinical operations. There are more than 27,000 outpatient visits per year. Teaching for our residents and medical students in their required advanced ambulatory medicine clerkship and residency clinics occur in multiple practice sites within and nearby the academic medical campus.

This is an exciting opportunity for a mid-level to senior general internist with past leadership experience in the areas of ambulatory medicine practice management, teaching, and mentoring faculty members. It is expected that the strong applicant would be able to provide dynamic leadership for our engaged providers and support staff as they continue to optimize the quality and efficiency of their team-based outpatient services, and would be eligible for academic appointment at the level of Associate or full Professor of Medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.
