The Division of Neonatology at Duke University School of Medicine (SOM) is seeking new faculty to join the Division in July 2021, at the medical instructor or assistant professor level. Ideal candidates are graduating neonatology fellows or early career neonatologists who have begun to establish themselves as clinician-scientists, clinician educators, or clinical program leaders. Candidates must have a Doctorate of Medicine or Osteopathy, and be board-certified in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, or board-eligible with expectations to be board-certified in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine within 3 years. Candidates must have, or be eligible for, a full North Carolina medical license.

We are seeking new members of the group who will enhance existing programs in clinical or translational research, clinical education or clinical program development. Key skill sets that will be prioritized include informatics and analytics, basic/translational science laboratory skills, and quality improvement methodologies. We are looking to establish a strong point of care ultrasound (POCUS) program in our intensive care nursery, and to continue development of our resuscitation and simulation training and research program, so experience with POCUS and in simulation training are preferable. As our intensive care nursery and high risk delivery services are both expanding, we are also seeking candidates with interest in acquiring medical director/clinical leadership skills.

Duke's Department of Pediatrics includes over 200 faculty with primary appointments in the Department. The Division of Neonatology includes 20 faculty members and 10 fellows (9 Neonatology fellows and 1 complex care follow-up program fellow). Several faculty members are also members of the Duke Clinical Research Institute and members of the Department's Division of Quantitative Sciences, which provides assistance in clinical trial design and data analysis to faculty throughout the Pediatric Department. Four of the faculty are pediatricians who lead our Follow-Up Program, which includes the Special Infant Care Clinic, the Transitional Medical Home Program and the Pediatric Heart Center Neurodevelopmental Follow-up clinic.

The Neonatology faculty currently provides complex care at two sites: the 67-bed level IV intensive care unit at Duke Hospital and an 18-bed Level II unit at Duke Regional Hospital located in Durham County. We expect the Duke Hospital Intensive Care Nursery to grow by 14 beds in the next 12 - 18 months.

The Division is a highly respected and productive member of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development Neonatal Research Network (NRN). Mortality rates and rates of bronchopulmonary dysplasia continue to be among the lowest among U.S. tertiary centers. Presently the Division has over 30 sponsored or investigator-initiated clinical trials in preparation, actively enrolling, or in follow-up. In addition to clinical research, 3 of our faculty are clinician researchers with active translational and bench research in microbiome and metabolomics, neural injury and repair, and developmental immunology.
