The Duke Center for Autism and Brain Development, under the leadership of Dr. Geraldine Dawson, PhD, is seeking a board-certified/board-eligible Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist with expertise in the assessment and treatment of children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). This position is a faculty appointment with rank commensurate with the applicant's experience.

We are seeking individuals who are interested in working with a growing team of clinicians, researchers, and educators with the goal of enhancing the range and scope of services provided to children and families. Clinical responsibilities will include participating in an outpatient, interdisciplinary, team-based treatment program at the Duke Center for Autism that is dedicated to providing high-quality, comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services to individuals with ASD (infancy through young adulthood) and their families. The attending Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist also will be responsible for teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, and child and adolescent psychiatry fellows.

Other opportunities may be available for conducting clinical assessments of children with ASD within clinical research studies at the Duke Center for Autism. These opportunities involve conducting assessments as part of an interdisciplinary research team that is conducting a wide range of longitudinal assessments, including diagnostic, observational, eye-tracking, EEG, and MRI/DTI measures.

Primary Activities: This clinical faculty position will include participating in individual- and team-based clinical activities focused on children with a range of ASD and related neurodevelopmental disorders. Clinical responsibilities will include participation in medical and interdisciplinary evaluations and intervention with children presenting with a wide array of needs. The position also will involve supervision of medical students, psychiatry residents, and child and adolescent psychiatry fellows, as well as the provision of in-service trainings. Scholarly activities are encouraged and supported.

The Duke Center for Autism and Brain Development is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to clinical services, research, and training. Our mission is to help each individual with ASD reach his or her full potential, and to improve the lives of individuals with ASD and related disorders and their family members. More than 100 autism patient visits occur weekly and close to 3,000 children are screened annually through Duke primary care sites, providing a large clinical population at Duke. More than 2,000 unique autism patients are served at Duke annually. Currently, Duke offers medical and behavioral health services, including parent training, early intervention based on the Early Start Denver Model and applied behavior analysis, social skills groups, cognitive-behavioral therapy, speech-language therapy, and occupational therapy. Medical subspecialty care at Duke includes medical genetics and genetic counseling, neurology, gastroenterology, and treatment of sleep disorders, eating disorders, and psychiatric co-morbidities, such as anxiety disorders, depression, and ADHD.
