We are currently offering a rewarding opportunity as a speech language pathologist at Carl R. Darnell Army Medical Center (CRDAMC), Ft. Hood, TX - Working as a Civilian employed provider.

Medical malpractice liability insurance is not required for federal civilian healthcare providers as they are covered by the Federal Tort Claims Act (28 U.S.C. § 1346(b)) while acting within the scope of their employment.

Responsibilities

Reviews medical record; interviews patient and records history information that pertains to the patient's communicative or swallowing disorder; conducts an evaluation, supplementing the examination of a swallowing disorder with diagnostic x-ray (videofluoroscopic swallow study, VFSS) and naso-pharyngeal endoscopy (functional endoscopic evaluation of swallow) using state-of-the-art, computerized diagnostic/therapeutic systems; performs laryngeal videostroboscopy for voice impaired patients; analyzes disordered voices with a sophisticated computer system; evaluates and treats patients who have been referred for vocal cord dysfunction masquerading as asthma; evaluates and treats head and neck cancer patients; evaluates and treats tracheotomized patients who are unable to communicate by conventional means; conducts appropriate testing of patients with other communicative disorders to determine diagnosis and treatment plan; evaluates results; records pertinent information in patient's medical record; provides information to patient and significant others; and refers patient to other specialty clinics when indicated.

- Initiates necessary therapeutic measures, conferring with physicians when indicated; consults with physician at appropriate intervals; ensures that patient and significant others understand the treatment plan; advises patients and family of home program procedures to ensure maximal therapeutic gain and carry-over; and instructs hospital staff and others who may be involved in the plan of patient care. Maintains appropriate records of patients under treatment and provides oral and written progress reports to referring physicians. Develops coherent treatment strategies, consistent with professional practice guidelines and clinic protocols, implements up-to-date evidence-based practice, and incorporates innovative treatment procedures, as appropriate. Demonstrates competence in the operation and maintenance of diverse and specialized speech-language pathology equipment, including endoscopes, computer facilities, and adjunct components. Utilizes patient records, patient performance, and family interviews/counseling as they contribute essential data in the diagnostic process and appropriate patient care. Organizes clinical data systematically for effective retrieval for clinic and investigational requirements. Responsible for analyzing problems that occur in the delivery of services, collection of related data and information, and implementing solutions and follow-up plans to assure that the actions were appropriate.

Responsible for Dysphagia patients, the incumbent provides dysphagia evaluations at bedside and those requiring a modified barium video fluoroscopic examination. This condition poses an extremely serious health condition that can affect a significant number of patients. The types of patients that require such a study are those with various severe neurologic afflictions and traumatic conditions involving the oral cavity and oropharynx.

Qualifications

US Citizenship required

Must meet credentialing and privileging requirements.

Degree: For speech pathologist positions, a graduate or higher level graduate degree that included 18 semester hours in the field of speech pathology with approved clinical practice. Applicants for positions with both speech pathologist and audiologist duties must have successfully completed all the requirements for a graduate or higher level degree with 18 semester hours in one of the fields with approved clinical practice and, in addition, must have either completed a minor in the other field or must have had at least 1 year of professional experience in the other field.

Professional and thorough knowledge obtained by extensive clinical experience diagnosing and treatment of a wide range of speech and language impaired patients with severe communication difficulties.

Knowledge of advanced techniques used in the evaluation and treatment of balance, gait, and dizzy patients with acute and complex problems and associated physical, mental, emotional and other conditions.

Advanced knowledge of TBI, and Central Auditory Processing Disorders.

Professional knowledge of the physical mental emotional, social, educational and vocational problems secondary to speech and language impairments which complicate the overall handicapped effect of the disorder.

Knowledge of contemporary diagnostic methods in clinical and rehabilitative speech pathology. Ability to properly select, administer and interpret the full-range of advanced diagnostic tests available to arrive at an accurate diagnosis a realistic prognosis, sound recommendations, and an appropriate treatment plan.

Knowledge of contemporary rehabilitation theories and clinical methodologies. Ability to plan and execute a therapeutic program appropriate to the patients symptomatology and ability to respond.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of counseling patients with speech/language disorders and their family members. Skill in establishing a sound therapeutic relationship with the patient; identifying emotional needs; behavior modification; and supportive counseling.

Knowledge of noise induced hearing loss and communication disorders accompanying this occupational injury and personal protective devices to prevent additional auditory injuries as well as Army Hearing Program documentation requirements and fitness for duty standards and required testing methodologies.

Knowledge of adult teaching methods to include problem-based learning.
