The Chief of Cardiology will provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the Division. The Division Chief will be responsible for all planning, policy, operations, and oversight of academic, research, and clinical programs of the Division. The Chief of Cardiology will have financial authority over the state-appropriated budget assigned to the division, extramural research funding received, philanthropic funding, and other financial matters for the division, in accordance with applicable University policies and practices. The Chief of Cardiology will have discretion in the recruitment and retention of division faculty. This position reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine within the College of Medicine – Phoenix for all academic activities. Consistent with the Academic Affiliation Agreement (AAA) between the University of Arizona and Banner Health, the Chief of Cardiology will have a matrix reporting relationship to the Chief Executive Officer of the Banner—University Medical Group (B—UMG) and CEO of B—UMC (Phoenix) for all clinical activities conducted at Banner—University Medical Center (Phoenix).

Consistent with the College’s foundational principle of collaboration, the Chief of Cardiology will work in close collaboration and partnership with others across the College of Medicine – Phoenix, University of Arizona Health Sciences (UAHS) Deans, Department Heads, Institute Directors, Center leadership, and with the College’s clinical partners. The Chief of Cardiology engages and interacts frequently with University of Arizona academic leadership and support units, University of Arizona Foundation, Banner—University Medicine leadership, key external stakeholders, and community officials.

Duties & Responsibilities:


  • The Chief of Cardiology will provide leadership and management of day-to-day operations of the Division of Cardiology.
  • The Chief of Cardiology is responsible for recruitment, management, compensation, career progression, and retention of faculty in consideration of UA, UHSC, College, and B—UMG strategic plans and initiatives in balance of the multiple, tripartite mission of the University.
  • The Chief of Cardiology will serve as the BUMG Heart Institute Physician Executive.

Educational and training programs:

  • The Chief of Cardiology will collaborate with Academic Affairs, GME leadership, and other educational offices at the College to ensure the department and his/her faculty are advancing the mission of the medical student, graduate student, and graduate medical education teaching programs. The Chief of Cardiology is responsible for maintaining liaison with other clinical and/or basic science departments to foster an integrated teaching environment for the College.

Research programs:

  • The Chief of Cardiology has the responsibility to encourage and support research creativity and productivity within the department, across the College and UAHS, and with the College’s key partners.
  • Provide leadership oversight and effective management of an active program of independent, extramurally funded basic, translational or clinical research in area of research expertise/specialization.

Clinical programs:

  • The Chief of Cardiology is the clinical role model and leader of the department’s clinical activities. The Chief of Cardiology works with the Dean, Department Head and the B—UMG CEO to coordinate the clinical activities of the Department. The Chief of Cardiology is responsible for maintaining appropriate standards of care appropriate to the discipline.
  • Provide direct patient care in the inpatient and/or ambulatory (outpatient) setting as a licensed and fully credentialed provider as a member of Banner—University Medical Group.

Finances and budget:

  • The Chief of Cardiology is responsible for ensuring the fiscal accountability and sustainability of the department working with the College’s Business Affairs Office.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Qualified candidates must possess a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from an accredited institution and be eligible for a University of Arizona academic appointment at the Associate Professor level or higher.
  • Board certified/participating in maintenance of certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine/Medical Subspecialties and eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Arizona.
  • Five years of progressively complex administrative experience (e.g., program leader, center/section director, etc.) in an academic medical center setting.
  • Demonstrated track record of distinction in teaching, clinical care, and/or research in an academic department of medicine or equivalent environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient care, reflecting a service-oriented, team-based philosophy with hospital administration and health professional colleagues from all disciplines, departments and specialties.
  • A sponsored research portfolio and/or evidence of scientific research including peer-reviewed articles and extramural funding.
  • Successful track record of recruitment and development of faculty, trainees, and students.
  • A record of solid performance as a skilled manager with the ability to grow revenues, meet budgets, measure and improve productivity and outcomes, and under take appropriate business strategies to achieve division, unit department and/or enterprise goals.
  • If the individual selected for employment does NOT currently hold a faculty title with University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix, he/she will be required to obtain faculty status. This will include obtaining letters of recommendation and review by the appropriate College review committee.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional health profession degree (e.g., PhD, MPH, MS, etc.)
  • Experience in the development and successful implementation of new academic (educational, patient care, research) programs and services.
  • Demonstrated outstanding leadership in major subspecialty division/section at a top 50 (NIH funded) department of internal medicine.
  • Demonstrated experience in academic program development, assessment, program review, and accreditation.
