 The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery.

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery (ORL-HNS) has a proud and rich combination of academic activities and service contributions. Since its founding in 1870, the Department has systematically built clinical, research, and educational programs that have become deeply integrated into the fabric of Penn Medicine, the University, and the community. 

Ranked among the best programs in the country for otorhinolaryngology, the Department continues to serve as the leading health care provider of the specialty in the region. Its vision is to improve the health of the communities it serves through the development of novel and more efficient healthcare models, and through research-driven patient care. Through careful stewardship of resources, ORL-HNS will preserve and promote its core missions of outstanding clinical care and education, and innovative research. The Department is dedicated to inspiring staff, students, residents, fellows and faculty to further their knowledge and skills to provide the highest quality of patient care.

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery is closely aligned with the Head and Neck Cancer Center, has a collaborative relationship with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), in addition to key partnerships with Plastic Surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, PPMC Trauma Center, Sleep Medicine, and the Smell and Taste Center.

The Chair of the Department directs 34 faculty members, with an additional 14 faculty at CHOP, and nearly 240 professional and support staff. Major hospital sites for clinical and educational activities include the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Hospital, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, CHOP, and the Crescenz VA Medical Center, institutions of great distinction and diversity. The practice has 155,000 outpatient visits a year, with over 19,000 annual new visits and nearly 40,000 active patients. In FY 2019, the department cared for over 1,500 inpatients. The Department is a member of the Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania (CPUP) and the Chair serves as a member of the Board of Directors of CPUP whose primary role is to coordinate the tripartite mission of Penn Medicine’s 18 clinical departments.

Qualified candidates hold MD or MD/PhD degrees and qualify for faculty appointment as Associate Professor or Professor rank in the Standing Faculty of the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) at the University of Pennsylvania. Candidates must be a respected active practitioner with a distinguished national/international record of research and possess dynamic, inclusive leadership and administrative expertise. Candidates must have a clear commitment to – and excellence in – education, fostering an inclusive environment, and sponsorship and mentorship of a diverse cadre of students, residents, fellows, and faculty. Candidates must have the demonstrated ability to foster strong collaborations among investigators within the Department, the PSOM, the campus community, and Philadelphia. The candidate must articulate a compelling vision for the future of Otorhinolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery at Penn Medicine, the role of the department within a highly regarded academic medical center and the field of otorhinolaryngology in general.
