Responsibilities

The staff hospitalist must be able to competently care for the hospitalized patient throughout the hospital stay. This includes emergency evaluation and triage in addition to admission to the hospital and formation of a differential diagnosis. It is essential to formulate a comprehensive care plan in accordance with the most up to date, evidence based protocols. The staff hospitalist must possess excellent communication skills and exhibit these through communication with primary medical doctors as well as in house consultant physicians and colleagues.

The primary function of the Physician working for the Hospitalist Service is to provide comprehensive care to medicine inpatients in collaboration with Physician Assistants (PA) and Nurse Practitioners (NP), the Director and Operations Manager of the Hospitalist Service and to teach staff. Exemplifies behaviors reflecting Service Excellence and support of the Strategic Dimensions by modeling the Core Success Factors as described in the Performance Review.

The hospitalist must interact in a professional manner with all members of the patient care team. The hospitalist physician should participate in education of the house staff physicians, students, nurses and all members of the patient care team. The hospitalist should keep high quality care and patient safety in mind while transitioning the patient back to the outpatient setting upon discharge. The hospitalist shall deliver the above with service excellence and patient satisfaction in mind. Participation onYale New Haven Hospitalcommittee's service is encouraged in an effort to demonstrate leadership.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

M.D. degree, full residency training and Board eligibility/certification in internal medicine mandatory.

EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years caring for medicine inpatients with teaching responsibilities/experience preferred.

LICENSURE

Hold or can obtain a valid Connecticut medical license, Connecticut Controlled Substance Registration and Federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Certification.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Excellent clinical, interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to work independently.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

MMR is required. Varivax (chicken pox vaccine) or evidence of prior chicken pox is required. Hepatitis B (or signed declination) is required for those with potential exposure to blood/body fluids. Tdap and influenza vaccination are strongly encouraged. Works weekends.Reports to work by 8:00 a.m. (7:00 a.m. if making the List) and expected to work until at least 1:00 p.m. on weekend days. Hours may vary as needed dependent on patient volume and acuity.
