The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) working in collaboration with the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) seeks a physician leader to serve as the new Director of our recently inaugurated Program in Transplantation. This new Program integrates a broad range of clinical and academic activities that have grown over the past three decades.

The new Program is one of just three such integrated programs at the School of Medicine/UMMC, joining our renowned Program in Trauma, and Program in Oncology, a top ranked and NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The new Program in Transplantation will serve as the coordinating umbrella for all transplantation-related clinical, research, and teaching activities of UMSOM and UMMC and includes all solid organ transplant clinical services as well as the research and educational activities associated with this focus.

The UMSOM/UMMC is home to one of the largest clinical transplant programs in the United States, performing on average well over 450 transplants per year, including kidney, liver, pancreas, heart, and lung transplants. The clinical center receives more than 1,500 new patient referrals each year and follows more than 5,400 patients who have been transplanted over the last two decades, as well as over 1,500 patients on the organ transplant waiting lists.

The Director will report to the Dean of the School of Medicine and work closely with the CEO of UMMC. Primary responsibility will be to drive transplant-related vision and recruitment strategies with participating academic departments in coordination with UMMC and UMSOM leadership. The ideal candidate will foster a culture of clinical excellence by optimizing patient outcomes, patient-centered care, innovative research and educational opportunities, and programmatic growth.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with at least five years of managerial experience as chief of a transplantation section (or similar leadership experience) with budgetary responsibilities, and a history of major administrative contributions to their department with credentials for appointment at the Professor level. A collaborative leadership perspective and experience promoting quality and safety in clinical programs are essential. Current extramural research funding is preferred. Applicants must hold a Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree, be specialty board certified and fellowship trained or demonstrate equivalent expertise and credentials. The candidate must be eligible to receive a physician’s license in Maryland and for appointment to the medical staff at UMMC.

All inquiries, nominations, and applications will be treated confidentially. For immediate consideration, please apply with a cover letter and updated CV by clicking on the Apply button. For additional questions after application, please e-mail Ms. Barbara Stewart at: bstewart@umm.edu.
