Overview

This position is located with the United States Army Medical Command, Weed Army Hospital, Community Mental Health Services, Fort Irwin, California.

Weed Army Community Hospital's Community Mental Health Service is located at Fort Irwin, CA, located 37 miles NE of the city of Barstow, Calofirnia. Located in the Inland Empire midway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Barstow offers the conveniences of small town living with the resources of major metropolitan areas only a short drive away. The extensive city park system features play areas, pools, bowling alleys, golf courses, tennis and volleyball courts, ball and soccer fields, batting cages and in-line roller hockey. Residents also enjoy outdoor activities such as camping, hunting, off-roading, and desert exploring. Ft. Irwin is only a short drive to the historic mountain valley community Big Bear Lake. The natural beauty of Big Bear Lake attracts boating enthusiast, cyclists, hikers, runners, snowboarders and skiers from all over the world.

Nearest airports are located in Ontario, CA (120 miles), Los Angeles (175 miles) and Las Vegas (180 miles).

Responsibilities

Screen and interviews patients, and perform bio-psychosocial evaluations, using expert knowledge of general and specific concepts, principles, procedures, and practices relating to psychological counseling. Provide targeted assessment and evaluation, including diagnostic impressions and functional status focused on the presenting problem. Provide timely and succinct feedback to other medical providers and Soldier's commander when appropriate regarding consultations findings and recommendations. Incumbent makes behavioral health diagnoses as appropriate in accordance with DSM-IV-TR criteria, or other, more current, accepted standards. Provides individual and group therapy, using various modalities as clinically indicated to include brief problem-focused psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and client-centered therapy. Assesses and provides crisis intervention for Soldiers. Reviews and approves the appropriate modality of each patient. Participates with other professional staff in providing emergency behavioral health services on a scheduled, rotating, and on-call basis to patients during normal duty hours to include screening patients for appropriateness of psychiatric hospitalizations. The incumbent maintains full professional responsibility and individual accountability for professional decisions and actions. Incumbent's findings, conclusions and recommendations are accepted as being professionally sound by colleagues and organization superiors.

Provide concise documentation of care and recommendations in patient's medical record in no more than 72 hours after the patient is seen.

Formulate behavioral health interventions and assisting with implementation and monitoring of treatment plans. Provide focused follow ups, including relapse - prevention education. Triage and referral of patients to Specialty Behavioral Health Care when appropriate. Administratively, functions as an interdisciplinary team member. Provide on-going consultation services for a sub-set of patients who require on-going monitoring and follow-up (i.e., continuity consultations) with BHCMs where appropriate. Uses objective and measurable outcomes to evaluate treatment effectiveness and make adjustments if appropriate for increased compliance and efficacy. Work as an inter-disciplinary team member to develop specific clinical pathways or best practice programs for targeted patient groups such as patients with acute stress symptoms and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Evaluate training opportunities, and professional development activities.

Qualifications

US Citizen

Full, independent practitioner state license required

Knowledge of psychodynamics, psychopathology, and therapeutic techniques in order to provide consultation and therapy to the most complex and difficult cases.

Ability to identify, adapt, and apply empirically supported, evidence-based interventions to a broad range of behavioral health problems, along with identifying functional outcomes. Recommendations that target occupational, social, and familial functioning; home activities; and recreation are expected. Skill in counseling to facilitate life changes (motivational enhancement techniques) is highly valued.

Skill to triage patients which requires demonstrating an understanding of the scope of practice in order to provide appropriate care for all patients and appropriately refer those who require alternative services.

Ability to communicate clearly is expected; written, and verbal communication is expected to be clear and free of psychological jargon, with documentation of services and recommendations in a concise and actionable manner.

Ability to communicate and negotiate with all levels of the organization regarding system problems and recommended solutions. Ability to conduct higher level command briefings, community liaison, in-service etc.

Knowledge and skill to prepare accurate written case documentation involving multiple dysfunctions and more complex cases, general correspondence, congressional correspondence, and staff papers.

Ability to formulate diagnostic and treatment recommendations and present findings to treatment teams (i.e., physicians, social workers, psychologists, and nursing staff as appropriate) or willingness to quickly develop this knowledge set.

Knowledge of and skill in the uses of psychological assessment, psycho-diagnostic evaluations, family dynamics, developmental theory, and psychotherapy. Possess specialized knowledge of evidence-based treatment for general behavioral health problems (e.g., depression and anxiety).
