The Hospital Medicine Program is a 24/7 in-house service. Physicians are expected to work 12 hour shifts. General job responsibilities include care for all patients referred to the service during their hospital stay, facilitation of patient and family involvement in the medical process with cultivation of the highest level of patient satisfaction, provision of medicine consultations, as requested. Providers must have a keen knowledge of the fundamental importance of accurate and timely transitions of care between members of the service, colleagues on other hospital based services, colleagues in the community, and other facilities. They will establish and maintain good relationships with referring providers. Appropriate communication with primary and other outpatient providers, especially at the time of discharge and with deterioration in clinical status, is expected. Physicians are expected to communicate with home care and post discharge facilities as necessary. Physicians must cooperate with policies of third-party payers, consistent with patient safety. They must strive to make efficient use of hospital resources and abide by agreed upon standards of care and implement patient care protocols as required. Hospitalist physicians are expected to participate in unit-based rounds, multidisciplinary rounds, work as a dyad with assigned APP teammate, and participate in clinical quality improvement projects. Physicians must work collaboratively with nursing and ancillary staff. They are expected to attend division meetings and actively participate in Northern Light Mercy Hospital and Northern Light Mercy Medical Group committees.

CCU Hospitalists will take on additional responsibilities in the critical care unit (CCU) including CCU admissions, intermediate care admissions/consultations and necessary procedures, all with appropriate intensivist back-up. Training and support will be provided in order assist the CCU Hospitalist in the acquisition and maintenance of required skills. CCU Hospitalists will integrate within the larger hospitalist team. Work setting will not be exclusive to the CCU and will include admissions and management of patients on medical floors. Responsibilities, workload and schedule, however, will be equitably balanced to allow the CCU Hospitalist to attend to critical patients as required. CCU Hospitalists are expected to take an active role in the design, implementation and growth of our CCU service. They will take on clinical leadership responsibilities as required, and are expected to provide ongoing educational support to CCU nurses and staff. Hospitalists must understand that responsibilities will evolve as the program matures.

Job Requirements:
Must be Board certified or eligible internal medicine (specify board). Must be eligible for a State of Maine license.

A MD or DO required. Must be eligible for Northern Light Mercy Hospital Staff membership. The incumbent must have an interest in the care of hospitalized patients. Must have a commitment to high quality, resource-efficient care. Must possess excellent communications skills.
