ACADEMIC PHYSICIAN (VA SPINAL CORD INJURY SERVICE)

The Syracuse VA Medical Center’s newly constructed, state-of-the-art Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Center is seeking an additional two full-time academic physicians. Candidates with board certification or eligibility in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation will be considered; candidates with board certification or eligibility in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine are also eligible to apply regardless of residency specialization, and will be given preference in the application, but is not exclusively required. Physicians will practice clinically at the VA Medical Center and hold academic appointments with the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University (UMU).

The position involves the day-to-day medical care of persons with SCI and disorders in both inpatient and outpatient settings, inclusive of both traumatic and non-traumatic SCI, multiple sclerosis, and ALS. It also includes the supervision of SUNY medical students, residents, and fellows, as well as nurse practitioners. The Syracuse VA Medical Center is a dynamic teaching hospital that is highly regarded in the Upstate New York region and within the VA nationally. It is closely affiliated with and physically adjacent to the SUNY UMU, with strong resident involvement. Applicants must possess a current and unrestricted license in any State, must qualify for an academic appointment at SUNY UMU, and should have excellent diagnostic and interpersonal skills, a commitment to team building and the overall aptitude for leadership, educational development, and research. A SUNY academic appointment will be conferred in accordance with academic rank commensurate with quality and length of experience. Opportunities for leadership within the service exist for highly qualified applicants, including the potential for becoming the Assistant Chief of SCI/D, and/or becoming the director of the newly ACGME-accredited SCI medicine fellowship. Protected time will be conferred to physicians who engage in research, quality improvement or educational program development.

The VA offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience using VA’s market-based physician pay system, and a comprehensive Federal benefits package which may include entitlement to apply for the Education Debt Reduction Program pending availability of funds.
