Job Summary:

Assesses the benefit of clinical genetic services with individuals and families with a medical history of cancer or other genetic disease. Participates and contributes to the CPGH operations to ensure efficient patient services are provided. Provides information and supportive counseling, coordinates genetic testing, evaluates and determines the needs of the individuals and families, and makes appropriate referrals based on the evaluations.

The Center for Personalized Genetic Healthcare, the clinical arm of the Genomic Medicine Institute, at the Cleveland Clinic is seeking a General/Pediatrics Genetic Counselor to join our team. Genetic Counselors at the Cleveland Clinic play a critical role in patient care, research and education. Genetic Counselors work independently yet collaboratively with medical geneticists and other members of the interdisciplinary team. Responsibilities would include providing genetic counseling to pediatric and adult patients with varying indications, as well as the opportunity to participate in specialty clinics. Participation in medical and community education as well as in research opportunities is encouraged. Working in the Center for Personalized Genetic Healthcare in the Genomic Medicine Institute, your responsibilities would include:

• Assessing the benefit of clinical genetic services with individuals and families with a medical history of genetic disease.
• Obtaining family histories and relevant medical information about patients.
• Providing information and supportive counseling.
• Coordinating genetic testing; communicating results to patients; and assisting patients with interpretation and risk assessment of abnormal results.
• Serving as a reference source to professionals and the general public for genetic services and information
• Participating in genetics teaching activities for genetic counseling students, medical students, residents, and graduate students.
• Providing genetics education to the general community.

Responsibilities:

• Evaluates adult genetic conditions.
• Provides interpretations and recommendations to physicians regarding patient results.
• Maintains summary of abnormal results and outcomes from testing.
• Reviews and approves reports.
• Makes referrals as necessary for ancillary testing.
• Serves as reference source to professionals and the general public for genetic services and information.
• Conducts counseling and case management for family history of cancer.
• Conducts group and individual counseling, including risk assessment and diagnostic information.
• Provides genetic counseling under the general direction of a medical geneticist.
• Assists patients with interpretation and risk assessment of abnormal results.
• Makes referrals to other services as appropriate.
• Coordinates molecular testing.
• Assists clinicians with procedures and patient support.
• Coordinates handling of patient specimens with laboratory.
• Reports results of testing to patients and referring physicians.
• Explains and interprets results to patients.
• Assists in assembling genetic information.
• Obtains family histories and relevant medical information about patients.
• Collects medical records, documents patient contacts and ascertains that patient charts are complete.
• Reviews literature of clinical case information.
• Prepares summaries and reports to patients and referring physicians.
• Develops new strategies for multi-site cancer risk assessment and assist with and participates in research studies.
• Participates in genetics teaching activities for medical students, residents, and graduate students.
• Provides education to general community.
• Participates in development of genetics educational materials.
• Attends and participates in professional meetings.
• Participates in multi-disciplinary specialty clinics.
• Other duties as assigned.

Education:

• Master's Degree from an accredited genetic counseling training program.

Certifications:

• ACMG (American College of Medical Genetics)/ABGC (American Board of Genetic Counseling) Board eligible or certified.
• Ohio Medical Board licensed or eligible.
• Must obtain ACMG or ABGC certification within one year of date of hire.

Complexity of Work:

• Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Must be able to work in a stressful environment.

Work Experience:

• Knowledge of genetics and genetic counseling.

Physical Requirements:

• Typical physical demands include a high degree of dexterity sufficient to operate a personal computer in the course of work, normal or corrected vision, extensive sitting and frequent walking, occasional lifting or carrying of 5 to 15 pounds.
