Job Details

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. For positions requiring positive education requirements, or if you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Degree: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicant's graduation. [A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) (or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country).]

Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in an institution accredited for such training. (This 1 year of supervised experience may be waived for research or administrative positions not requiring direct patient care.) For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Listings of accredited programs are published yearly in the Directory of Residency Training Programs and the Yearbook and Directory of Osteopathic Physicians.

An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).

A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association (AMA) or AOA. A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or other institution accredited in the United States for such training.

Licensure: For positions involving patient care, candidates must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: GS-15: At least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service or 5 years of residency training in the specialty of the position to be filled or a combination of equivalent experience and training. Specialized Experience is defined as serving as a physician and providing administrative management and/or supervision of physicians who provide direct patient care in a hospital or clinical environment. (You must provide clear documentation in your application of how you meet this qualification requirement, including any necessary transcripts, certificates, licenses, diplomas, etc.). Managerial Abilities: This is a managerial position and candidates, in addition to the professional qualifications listed, must have demonstrated in their wok experience or training, that they possess, or have potential to develop, the qualities of successful supervision, as required for this position. The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service. Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet the requirements of the job by 11:59 (Eastern Standard Time) of the closing date: 02/27/2019

Company

The Indian Health Service (IHS), an agency within the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), works to ensure that all American Indians and Alaska Natives receive comprehensive, patient-centered health care services and all Indian health facilities are staffed with well-trained, compassionate, committed health professionals.

IHS offers physicians an extraordinary career opportunity to provide community-based care within a variety of health care settings. A wide range of medical specialties are in demand, including anesthesiology, emergency medicine, epidemiology, family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, ophthalmology, pediatrics, podiatry, psychiatry, radiology and surgery. Many of our physicians serve the Indian health community as clinical consultants and advocates for system-wide improvements and innovations.

Indian health careers offer dedicated practitioners a chance to live and work within Native communities, providing a unique opportunity to learn about Tribal culture and experience traditions that have been handed down for generations.

An Indian health career offers physicians a choice of three practice options: working as a federal civil service employee, as an Officer in the Commissioned Corps of the US Public Health Service (USPHS) or directly for a Tribal or Urban Indian program. Each option offers career flexibility, competitive salaries and benefits and ample opportunity for advancement. Applicants must be US citizens.

Another key benefit is the IHS Loan Repayment Program (LRP), which offers health professionals practicing at Indian health facilities an opportunity to pay off all of their health education student loans in addition to receiving competitive salaries and benefits. Participants are eligible to receive up to $20,000 per year and can extend their contract annually until all of their loans are paid off.

For more information, visit www.ihs.gov/careeropps.

The policy of the IHS is to provide absolute preference to qualified Indian applicants and employees who are suitable for federal employment in filling vacancies within the IHS. IHS is an equal opportunity employer.
