Ochsner Health System in New Orleans, Louisiana, announces an exceptional opportunity for a nationally recognized surgeon to serve as Chair of the Department of Surgery for Ochsner Medical Center, a 560-bed acute care hospital and flagship institution for Ochsner Health System. Ochsner Health System, one of the largest non-profit, academic, multispecialty healthcare delivery systems in the United States, provides clinical and hospital patient care in 40 hospitals and more than 200 health centers and urgent care centers throughout the region. The Chair of Surgery will provide leadership to, and oversight of the Department which consists of over 60 providers in six sections including vascular surgery, pediatric surgery, abdominal transplant surgery, cardiac/thoracic/congenital heart surgery, plastics, and reconstructive surgery, and general surgery. The Department of Surgery was first chaired by our founder and namesake, Alton Ochsner, and while centered at our flagship teaching hospital (Ochsner Medical Center), includes surgeons who practice at five additional Ochsner hospitals in the New Orleans Metro Area. Our education mission includes a residency program in general surgery (finishes six chiefs per year) and fellowships in cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, and abdominal transplant surgery.

The new Chair has responsibility for the development and maintenance of efficient, and effective clinical operations, and the promotion of collaborative work relationships between clinicians at all levels. The Chair oversees all academic and teaching components of surgery, and ensures the highest level of clinical quality and patient safety. Achieving a high performing Department through a commitment to evidence-based surgical care, process improvement, and the development of a quality improvement program will be important aspects of the position. Successful Chair candidates will be recognized as outstanding leaders in surgery and have an excellent track record in clinical care, research, and teaching within a nationally recognized surgical program. The successful candidate must be collaborative and able to lead an efficient and effective surgery program across a large enterprise with the highest standards of clinical outcomes. Current board certification in General Surgery and/or a related surgical sub-specialty area is required.
