Practice Details

Current Neurology Staffing at KHN/Fort Hamilton Hospital: KHN has a long-standing relationship with the Dayton Center for Neurological Disorders, a large private single specialty neurology group. They are not currently providing services at Fort Hamilton Hospital. Currently neurology and stroke coverage are being provided through a collaboration between University of Cincinnati, Telemedicine, and a local physician (covering inpatient consults). The physician was previously private practice in a neighboring community, recently his practice was acquired by a competing health system TriHealth. He’s continued to provide inpatient coverage on a $/consult model on the weekends. During the week coverage is provided by U of Cincinnati or via telemedicine.

For acute stroke patients, TPA decision is made by ER physician and UC Stroke Team collaboration via telerobotic assessment. Patients are either kept locally in the ICU (who manages the ICU patients at Fort Hamilton) or transferred to UC if an Endovascular procedure is indicated. In the future, KPN would like patients to be sent to KMC for Endovascular procedures. KHN has two KPN hospital employed Open/Endovascular Neurosurgeons while DCND has one Neuro-Interventionalist who collectively provide coverage in this specialty.

Schedule: Position will be a mix of general and stroke neurology with a mix of inpatient and outpatient consults. Administration will collaborate with the incoming neurologist on defining schedule, call, office space, office personnel hiring, inpatient responsibilities, on-call duties, and appropriate quality indicators. Physician will be included in executive leadership meetings with Fort Hamilton executive team and KPN Brain and Spine Service Line as it relates to growth strategies for Neurology. Dr. Romanello, Fort Hamilton’s Chief Medical Office and ED physician, will be able to speak with candidates more about the direction and vision for the program. Dr. Kamal Woods is the Service Line Director of the Kettering Brain and Spine program and a Minimally Invasive Spine surgeon, and will also assist in providing a broader network picture and vision of how this physician will closely align and build strategy with the Network as a whole.

Call: To be negotiated. KPN will continue to contract with the national telemedicine company and UC to provide call coverage. This has worked very well for the hospital for many years. The incoming physician will be able to take call as they desire. KPN is conscientious of burnout and does not aim to bring a physician only to burn the individual out on call.
