Vice President, Research & Innovation

St. Michael’s Hospital, Providence Healthcare and St. Joseph’s Health Centre (the Network), fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, the largest research entity in Canada, is seeking an international leader in research and innovation to serve as their next Vice President, Research & Innovation.

On August 1, 2017, three hospitals in Toronto, Ontario, Canada officially united under a single health network (Providence Healthcare, St. Joseph’s Health Centre, and St. Michael’s Hospital) to advance the health of our patients, clients, and residents, and our urban communities. The Network’s more than 10,000 staff and physicians serve communities from Etobicoke to Scarborough. With an annual budget of more than $1 billion and 1,100 inpatient beds, the Network provides the full spectrum of care from primary, secondary, community, tertiary, and quaternary care services to post-acute through rehabilitation, palliative care, and long-term care.

The Network is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto (U of T), the largest research entity in Canada. The Faculty of Medicine at U of T is ranked the top medical school in Canada, and among the top 20 worldwide. U of T Medicine researchers collaborate with researchers all over the world. Last year, they co-authored more than 12,000 papers with researchers in 153 counties ranging from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. The Faculty of Medicine and its affiliated hospitals form one of the leading health sciences centres for research and education in North America. The hub centres on the Toronto Academic Health Sciences Network – nine teaching hospitals fully affiliated with U of T and four associate member institutions – and extends to another 20 community-affiliated hospitals and healthcare sites in the Greater Toronto Area and beyond.

Research at the Network is conducted by 244 world-class scientists in two main areas - the Keenan Research Centre for Biomedical Science, which focuses on basic and translational science research, and the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, which focuses on clinical and health services research. Our Network’s research funding totals $78 million annually. The Keenan Research Centre for Biomedical Science is home to basic science and translational research at the Network. Our researchers target common and high burden illnesses that are important to patients. Our research teams strive to make discoveries that will improve patients’ lives. The Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute runs clinical trials and specializes in research on health services and policy, population health, global health, indigenous health, and knowledge translation research at the Network. Our focus is on conducting research and disseminating knowledge that is relevant for our health-care system and important to our patients.

The VP, Research and Innovation role is a rich mix of operational and strategic responsibilities. Reporting to the President and CEO, the VP, Research and Innovation will provide leadership in promoting the Network’s research culture by fostering an environment conducive to high quality scholarship informed by and grounded in the Network’s values and focused on the highest quality patient care. In addition to oversight of the larger research portfolio, the Vice President will have an expanded role with responsibilities for working directly with the Network’s Executive Committee and the Research & Education Committee of the Network's Board on developing a vision for the future of research within the three hospitals as well as trans-institutional strategies. The successful candidate will also work closely with leaders from the Toronto Academic Health Sciences Network (TAHSN), a dynamic network of academic health organizations comprised of the University of Toronto and 13 academic hospitals including Providence, St. Joseph’s and St. Michael’s.

The next Vice President will be a leader in the world of health research. The successful candidate will bring a spirit of excitement in innovation, build partnerships that drive an entrepreneurial focus, lead with collaboration, and keep research teams across the Network focused on both the Network’s vision and the ability to deliver with excellence and impact. With an impeccable reputation as a scholar with an impact on the world of research, the successful candidate must be intellectually adventurous, possess a passion for research discovery, appreciate the importance of different types of research across many different disciplines, embrace a culture of discovery in a hospital environment, and enjoy building bridges across the Network and beyond.
