Are you an exceptional candidate who can provide leadership to one of the world’s preeminent organizations for research in maternal and child health and medical rehabilitation? This position offers a unique opportunity to serve as the second-in-command of the Institute and principal advisor to the Director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), with responsibility for the execution and management of daily operations in support of NICHD’s strategic vision and mission. The NICHD achieves that mission through a broad multidisciplinary biomedical and behavioral research program encompassing all stages of human development, from preconception through adulthood, oriented to improving the health of children, adults, families, communities, and populations. The Institute also designs and implements prevention and intervention efforts, and communication strategies that encompass training, education, technology transfer, and community outreach. The Deputy Director works collaboratively across the NIH, throughout the federal government and with other key stakeholders and organizations to further the advancement of the Institute’s mission and objectives, to promote public health, and to address health disparities. He/she serves as an ambassador and spokesperson for the Institute, communicating NICHD’s position and incorporating the views/needs of key stakeholders into Institute plans and initiatives. The Deputy Director facilitates the identification and development of future leaders through mentoring programs, continuous development of skills and expertise, and recognition of  achievements. He/she serves as a role model to the rest of the Institute, managing people and financial resources with integrity and fairness, while maintaining the Institute’s policies and priorities.

We are looking for applicants with a commitment to scientific excellence and the energy, enthusiasm, and innovative thinking necessary to lead within a dynamic and diverse organization. Applicants must possess an MD and/or PhD or comparable doctorate degree, and possess senior-level scientific research experience and outstanding scientific knowledge of research programs in one or more scientific areas related to maternal or child health or medical rehabilitation or related fields (e.g., pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, developmental biology, genetics, reproductive health, developmental disabilities, medical rehabilitation); a distinguished track record of experience, and demonstrated leadership and broad visionary capabilities in one or more of these or related fields; experience in research grants administration; and demonstrated management acumen. The successful candidate for this position will be appointed at a salary commensurate with experience and accomplishments, and full Federal benefits including, retirement, health and life insurance, long term care insurance, leave, and savings plan (401K equivalent).
