The Duke Division of Emergency Medicine and the Durham County EMS are recruiting a Medical Director for the Durham County EMS. This is a shared position between Duke Health and the Durham County EMS.

The ideal candidate is expected to have completed a fellowship in Emergency Medicine, and be Board Certified or Board Eligible in EMS.  In addition to excellent EMS skills, the ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal and leadership skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment in a flagship medical center. Leadership or management experience in EMS service is preferred.

Durham County EMS:

  • The Department of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) serves the entire population of Durham County estimated to be approximately 300,000 and a service area of 299 square miles. The DCEMS paramedics respond to approximately 47,500 calls for service annually. The department is divided in two four divisions - Operations, Clinical Affairs, Finance and Administration, and Support Services.
  • The Durham County EMS System Medical Director oversees all licensed ambulance services in Durham County.  Duke has continuously held the contract for EMS medical direction since inception.
  • The Medical Director contract is overseen by the Durham County Emergency Medical Services EMS Director.

  • One set of protocols for all credentialed EMS providers and first responders
  • One PSAP - Durham Emergency Communications Center recognized by ACE
  • Working toward CAAS accreditation
  • ESO Solutions documentation software
  • AHA Gold Plus STEMI recognition in May 2018
  • State of the art ambulances and equipment
  • Mobile Simulation Unit with high-fidelity manikins for training
  • Real-time data monitoring and QM/QA with FirstWatch

Two hospitals in Durham County currently have representation from EMS on QA committees at each hospital and each hospital is represented on the EMS Peer Review Committee with great working relationships.

  • Duke Regional Hospital

Durham Fire Department is a full time paid service which handles a bulk of the area's calls requiring a first responder.

Bahama, Redwood and Lebanon volunteer fire departments have paid staff 24/7 and respond to EMS calls for service outside the city limits.

Duke Emergency Medicine:

Duke University Medical Center is a Level I Trauma Center with over 80,000 visits annually, a state of the art facility, and a competitive EM residency program.
