OpenNotes, a national and international movement seeking to foster and evaluate the adoption of fully transparent medical records is seeking an Executive Director. Supported by several major national philanthropies, the Director will lead the OpenNotes team in partnering with health care providers and consumers to spread open notes to increasingly diverse populations across the country. By fostering more active patient and clinician communication and engagement, the overarching goal is to establish a new national standard of care that enhances the equity, value, and safety of care.

OpenNotes (www.opennotes.org), housed within the Division of General Medicine and Primary Care at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston, has staff and colleagues in other parts of the United States. The Executive Director, who will be located in Boston, is charged with establishing policy, developing strategy collaboratively with the OpenNotes Executive Committee (comprised of senior staff from all US locations), providing direction for the team, and overseeing planning and budgeting in tandem with the OpenNotes administrative staff.

The work is divided into three major components:1. Spread: Scale OpenNotes to provide up to 50 million patients easy access to their clinicians' notes; 2. Discovery: Spawn a range of initiatives that stimulate patient and family engagement through fully transparent records and thereby lend impetus to further spread; and 3. Measurement: Measure and evaluate the effects of open notes, with the goal of informing and stimulating both spread and discovery.

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Providing senior leadership, vision, and direction for OpenNotes; sustaining and highlighting the success of the team's research and spread efforts. Possess the ability to apply an equity lens to programmatic initiatives and inspire/coach others to do the same.
  2. Serving as a national and international spokesperson for OpenNotes and providing staff (including directors in remote locations) a strong day-to-day leadership presence.
  3. Working closely with the OpenNotes Advisory Board.
  4. Leading and supporting managers and directors in developing and improving operations to create optimal performance levels. Direct Reports: 4-6 Indirect Reports: 21-50; has full responsibility for planning, monitoring, and managing department budget.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree required. Doctoral degree in MD or PhD preferred.
  2. 5-8 Years related work experience required and 3-5 years supervisory/management experience required
  3. Srategic leader with demonstrated success in fostering complex programmatic growth through innovation and collaboration.
  4. The successful candidate will be a widely recognized, highly creative, and accomplished individual with a strong track record of excellence and professional leadership.
  5. Advanced skills with Microsoft applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Access, and other web-based applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience in health equity, addressing systemic health disparities and collaborating with diverse and underrepresented populations is a major plus.
  2. An MD, PhD in a relevant field, or terminal degree in another area of study is preferred. An appropriate faculty appointment at Harvard University will be offered to qualified candidates.
