Position Scope

  • NU Health Service Evanston averages about 30,000 outpatient visits a year and provides healthcare services to NU Students.
  • The current operating budget is $8.9 million and the department generated over $3.7 million in revenue for FY 2015.
  • Direct reports include: Medical Director, Head Team Physician and Director of Sports Medicine, Director of Administration and Information Technology, Clinical Practice Manager, and Director of Health Promotion and Wellness.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Provides leadership and general management for a comprehensive primary care medical service for students.
  • Provides leadership and general management for a comprehensive sports medicine service for intercollegiate athletes and for all students.
  • Oversees the Health Promotion and Wellness program for students and promotes preventive health medicine activities for the student community.
  • Leads the development of Health Service programs, services, and policies.
  • Directs a comprehensive organizational quality improvement program, including medical care quality assurance activities.
  • Ensures ongoing accreditation of the Health Service in good standing with the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC).
  • Oversees reporting and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Responsible for NU Health Service operations and for strategic planning for the Health Service.
  • Oversees the recruiting, supervision, and credentialing of medical staff as well as the maintenance of appropriate staff and facility credentialing and licensure.
  • Coordinates and participates in annual performance appraisals of Health Service Staff.
  • Represents the Health Service to various on-campus and off-campus constituencies.
  • Maintains regular communication with the Vice President for Student Affairs as pertains to the operations and strategic planning for the Health Service and the Vice President for Athletics and Recreation for sports medicine operations and administration.
  • Establishes appropriate liaisons with other University departments, federal, state, and community health agencies, and other health related resources.
  • Assesses and monitors the health status of the Northwestern University student community.
  • Develops programs to meet the overall personal and public health needs of the University student community.
  • In collaboration with University, local and state agencies, respond to any public health emergency that affects the University, its students, staff, or faculty.
  • Supervises the financial management of the Health Service, including budget development, planning, and implementation.
  • Oversees a contract to operate the Health Service on Northwestern’s Chicago campus.
  • Participates in efforts to improve the health insurance program offered to NU students.
  • Consults with other Health Service and University staff, parents, physicians, faculty, and others when appropriate.
  • Makes referrals for students outside the Health Service when appropriate and resolution of issues related to access to health care services.
  • Chairs the Health Service Executive Committee and serves on various Health Service, Division of Student Affairs, and University committees.
  • Provides leadership for the University Advisory Committee on Health Service.
  • Serves on the Student Affairs Leadership Team.
  • Leads the Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC).
  • Participates in NU’s emergency response efforts (Emergency Support University Health and Human Services).
  • Responsible for the NU Pandemic Plan and coordination of supporting resources for the plan.
  • Participates in oversight of the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP).
  • Performs other related functions as needed or assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An advanced degree in health care, health care administration, public health, academic administration, or a related field and at least five years of progressive administrative and management experience in a health care and/or higher education setting.
  • Graduate of an approved medical school (MD or DO) including completion of an approved internship and residency in a primary care specialty; or a doctorate degree with public health or community health experience; or a doctorate degree with higher education administrative experience preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills and leadership abilities.
  • Visionary, strategic thinker able to look at the big picture and able to develop and implement long term plans.
  • Previous administrative experience and managerial competencies in college health or a related area with evidence of managing significant budget and staff resources that focus on the delivery of healthcare programs and services preferred.
  • Experience with healthcare financing models, emerging issues in healthcare reform, and health insurance specific to a college health population desirable.
  • Prior experience with developing programs, services and research initiatives related to health issues relevant to a college health population desirable.
  • Knowledge of contemporary college student health issues and current evidence-based practice for treatment, prevention, and intervention desired.
