JOB SUMMARY:The Scientific Communication Writer/Journalist is responsible for creating a wide range of published content about the scientific/research enterprise at Geisinger. Content target audiences would include the research community (national and international), general public, potential research participants and research/non-research employees. Created content uses include brochures, media pitches, press releases, feature articles, training programs, websites and a variety of social media channels dependent upon the target audience. Once developed, content should be usable across multiple platforms and with multiple target audiences (Omni-channel concept).

Works closely with the Corporate Communications team to ensure content is usable for multiple communication channels and purposes and follows established style and brand. The Scientific Communications Writer would be responsible for the research enterprise editorial process as well as the editorial processes of the Corporate Communications office. Responsible for developing social media initiatives for research. This position may also help researchers and the public relations team to prepare papers or presentations for conferences or scientific journals.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:• Produces articles for publication in print and online according to agreed style and keeping to strict deadlines;
• Works with Corporate Communications to design consistent image and message for social media channels (ie: Facebook Timeline cover, profile pic, thumbnails, ads, landing pages, Twitter profile, and blog);
• Develop social media campaign for research;
• Displays knowledge and understanding of Social Media platforms, their respective participants (Facebook, Twitter, Yelp, Google+Local, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest etc.) and how each platform can be deployed in different scenarios
• Conducts interviews with scientists, doctors and academics and establishing a network of industry experts;
• Attends academic and press conferences;
• Visits research establishments;
• Reads and researches specialist media and literature, e.g. scientific papers, company reports, newspapers, magazines and journals, press releases and internet resources including social media;
• Attends meetings or taking part in conference calls with clients, scientists or other writers;
• Meets with colleagues to plan the content of a document or publication;
• Conducts reference searches;
• Reviews and amends work in response to editor feedback;
• Selects appropriate artwork;
• Reads page proofs from printers and checks color proofs;
• Monitors, listens and responds to users in social media formats;
• Conducts online advocacy and open stream for cross-promotions;
• Develops and expand community and/or blogger outreach effort;

SPECIFIC POSITION DUTIES:
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:Demonstrated excellence in writing and copy-editing
Experience writing for the web
Experience writing about health, healthcare, and research for both general and clinical audiences
Experience writing for publication in research/medical journals
Ability to manage multiple and rapidly changing priorities as required
Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills
Ability to work with staff at all levels of the organization
Ability to take broad guidelines of a task, initiate a course of action and then coordinate the activity through completion.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:Bachelor’s Degree in a specialized field such as Biology, Chemistry, Medicine, Computer Science is highly preferred and/or a degree in journalism, English, Public Relations or Communications related area [i.e.: Health Communications, Public Health, Journalism, etc.] required.

Five years’ work experience as a science writer/journalist for a variety of media (print, digital, social media, websites, newspapers, etc.) and audiences (experts and/or laypersons) required.
