Director for Clinical Trials and Translational Research/

Associate Medical Director, Baystate Regional Cancer Program

Baystate Health

Springfield, Massachusetts

The Opportunity

Baystate Health is seeking a Director for Clinical Trials and Translational Research, Baystate Regional Cancer Program (“the Director”) to lead the development and growth of a robust clinical research program. This newly created position is an outstanding opportunity for a talented clinician and researcher to join a premier health system at a critical time in its history and impact its future, through leadership of this key joint strategic initiative of the Baystate Health and the newly established UMass Medical School-Baystate. The Director will also act as Associate Medical Director for the Baystate Regional Cancer Program.

The Organization

Baystate Health (BH) is one of New England’s leading and largest integrated healthcare systems, serving a population of nearly one million in western Massachusetts. With more than 12,000 employees, a 1,200 member medical staff, and net patient service revenue of more than $2 billion, this dynamic, highly regarded system is financially strong and includes five member hospitals and a 600-physician medical group. Baystate Health’s academic flagship hospital, 716-bed Baystate Medical Center (BMC) is the region’s only tertiary care referral academic medical center. The Baystate Regional Cancer Program (BRCP) is the leading and largest provider of cancer treatment services in western Massachusetts, accessioning over 2,000 new cancer cases annually. The infusion suite at BMC’s D’Amour Center for Cancer Care is among the busiest in the nation. The Hematology Oncology Division of the Department of Medicine offers a successful three-year fellowship in hematology oncology.

In June, 2015, Baystate Health announced a new partnership with the UMass Medical School and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, establishing a regional clinical campus of the UMass Medical School (UMMS) in Springfield known as UMMS-Baystate Health. The partnership will also create an Institute for Integrated Health Care Delivery Research as a collaborative effort between UMMS, Baystate Health, and UMass Amherst’s School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS). The partnership will also create a Center for Clinical Trials which will leverage the resources of Baystate Health and UMMS to grow the BH clinical trials portfolio.

The Position

As a major element of its strategic plan for the future, BRCP is committed to substantially increasing clinical trials availability and enrollment and to the development and growth of a robust clinical research program. The Director will provide strategic, innovative, and operational leadership for the clinical trials program at BRCP. The Director will be responsible for establishing the direction and enhancing and promoting the health system’s integrated clinical cancer research strategy, including audit efforts, key cooperative group and pharmaceutical industry linkages, and benchmarks for investigator-driven research efforts in the health system. The Director will maintain active clinical practice as complementary to and supportive of his or her administrative and research responsibilities.

The successful candidate will be Board Certified in Medical Oncology and/or Hematology. He or she will be an active clinical trialist with an established reputation for clinical excellence. The ideal candidate will possess a track record of scholarly activity and professional service as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications, committee activity in NCI cooperative groups, and/or external research funding.
