The Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Boise, Idaho, is seeking a full-time staff physician in Infectious Disease Medicine in the physician/scientist pathway. Certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine in Infectious Diseases is required. The incumbent will spend approximately 5/8 time in clinical duties and the other 3/8 in research. Clinical duties will include inpatient rounds, clinical duties, and consult services. In addition, there will be a half-day of outpatient clinic per week throughout the year.

The Boise VA Medical Center is affiliated with the University of Washington, Boise State University, and Idaho State University. The incumbent will actively participate in teaching medical students, residents, and fellows. Physicians applying for this position must have recent experience in formulating and bringing to completion independent research and publishing scientific papers in peer-reviewed medical journals. In addition, the incumbent must have experience seeking research funding, writing grant proposals, and obtaining research grants. Experience in basic science research pertaining to mechanisms of Gram positive pathogens is preferred.

The incumbent will join an internationally known research group with expertise in pathophysiology of infections caused by gram positive bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumonia, Group A streptococcus, MRSA, and a variety of clostridial species. Research priorities are mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis. The 18,000 square-foot basic science laboratory was built in 2013, and houses $2,000,000 of new equipment. There are six principle investigators, six laboratory technicians, a state-of-the-art animal facility, and appropriate administrative staff to support a variety of research interests. The affiliated Idaho Veterans Research and Education Foundation currently administers numerous grants from NIH and pharmaceutical corporations. The research service supports 5-6 undergraduate and graduate students as well as post-doctoral fellows each year.

The Boise VA Medical Center Primary service area has a radius of approximately 160 miles with an estimated veteran population of 94,000, with over 150,000 outpatient visit and 10,000 hospital admissions annually. 

Candidates with significant research and teaching experience in infectious diseases are preferred. The incumbent will also provide high quality care to America’s Heroes, and guide the professional and academic development of medical students, medical residents, and fellows. She/he will enjoy active collaboration with hospital and departmental leadership, develop patient care standards, and partner with hospital leadership in program development.
