Clinical and Translational Research. The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) and the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology at the UNM School of Medicine invite physician or physician scientists with expertise in translational and/or clinical research focused on gastrointestinal (GI) oncology to provide leadership of the UNMCCC GI Cancer Research Program. Applications are invited from mid-career physicians or physician-scientists (MD or MD/PhD) who may be appointed at the Associate or Full Professor level. Faculty rank and appointment will be commensurate with accomplishments. Particularly invited to apply are physicians capable of leading this important clinical and translational research effort that integrates population science and cancer control in New Mexico's unique multi-ethnic populations who have significant disparities in GI cancer incidence and mortality with laboratory investigation and translational and clinical research focused on the development of investigator-initiated and early phase clinical trials. The successful applicant will have a strong track record of peer-reviewed extramural funding (NIH, NCI, or equivalent), expertise in translational and clinical cancer research and clinical trials, academic accomplishment, and, the ability to develop and lead highly collaborative trans-disciplinary research teams. Applicants whose research is highly synergistic with the existing NCI Research Programs of the UNMCCC, highlighted below, will be given priority. Significant resources, including a comprehensive start-up package and endowed positions, are available. Minimum qualifications include: 1) MD or MD/PhD degree with board certification in Internal Medicine and board certification in Medical Oncology; 2) track record of external, peer-reviewed funding in GI cancer research and/or clinical/translational research related to GI cancers; 3) academic accomplishments commensurate with appointment to Associate or Full Professor; and 4) must be eligible to work in the US.; this is not a J-1 Visa opportunity. Preferred qualifications include: 1) leadership experience and experience building multidisciplinary research teams and developing multi-investigator grants and programs, and 2) experience in GI cancer clinical trials, investigator initiated trials, and early phase clinical trials and interventions. The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 400-mile radius. One of the premier cancer centers nationwide, the UNM CCC has 128 board-certified oncology physicians, forming New Mexico's largest cancer care team. It treats about 60 percent of adults and virtually all the children in New Mexico diagnosed with cancer, more than 10,000 people, from every county in the state, in more than 135,000 clinic visits each year. Through its partnership with the New Mexico Cancer Care Alliance, an 'exemplary national model for cancer health care delivery,' the UNM CCC offers access to more than 160 clinical trials to New Mexicans in every part of the state. Annual research funding of more than $72 million supports the UNM CCC's 132 cancer scientists. Working with partners at Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories, Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, and New Mexico State University, they have developed new diagnostics and drugs for leukemia, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, liver and pancreatic cancer, brain cancer, and melanoma; garnered 33 new patents and 117 patents pending; and launched 13 new biotechnology companies since 2010.
