JOB TITLE: Medical Officer (Specialties) - Direct Hire

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT NUMBER: IHS-16-TU-1521290-DHA

SALARY RANGE: $98,967.00 to $215,000.00 / Per Year

DUTIES:

  • Responsible for the practice of medicine or direct service to patients involving the performance of diagnostic, preventative, or therapeutic services to patients in hospitals and clinics.
  • Prescribe or administer treatment, therapy, medication, vaccination, and other specialized medical care to treat, prevent illness, disease, or injury.
  • Order, perform, and interpret tests and analyze records, reports, and examination information to diagnose patients condition.
  • Collect, record, and maintain patient information, such as medical history, reports, and examinations results. Experience with electronic health records is preferred.
  • Monitor patients' conditions and progress and reevaluate treatments as necessary.
  • Explain procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patients.
  • Refer patients to medical specialists or other practitioners when necessary.
  • Coordinate work with nurses, pharmacists, social workers, and other allied health professionals in the provision of a variety of health services.

KEY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Specific education and licensure requirements must be met.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):

Degree: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicant's graduation. A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country. Transcripts must be submitted.

Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in an institution accredited within the United States or Canada.

Licensure: For positions involving patient care, candidates must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. A copy of the license must be submitted.

Additional Requirements for Grades GS-12 and Above:

Specialist positions
For GS-13: 3 years of residency training in a Medical Specialty OR have equivalent training and work experience in a Medical Specialty that demonstrates the ability to provide patient care of an average difficulty and responsibility. Typically, completion of full formal residency training (at least 3 years) required by specialty board or progressive experience equivalent in breadth and intensity.
For GS-14: 4 years of residency training in a Medical Specialty OR have equivalent training and work experience in a Medical Specialty (e.g., a specialist with 1-2 years of experience beyond residency training) that demonstrates the ability to provide patient care of a very difficult and responsible level.
For GS-15: 5 years of residency training in a Medical Specialty OR have equivalent training and work experience in a Medical Specialty (e.g., a senior specialist with 3-4 years of experience beyond residency training) that demonstrates the ability to provide patient care of an extremely difficult and responsible level.

Final Year Residents: Applications will be accepted from applicants who are in their final year of residency and are expected to complete their residency training within the next 12 months. Such applicants are required to provide evidence to meeting all position requirements before they can enter on duty.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

  • Immunization against Measles and Rubella required; influenza vaccine is recommended.
  • 1-year probationary period for initial appointment to Federal service.
  • May work alternative work schedule to provide continuity of service.
  • Position covered by Public Law 101-630, Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act.
  • Must have a viable bank account at a financial institution for electronic direct deposit of salary payment.
  • May operate U.S. Government vehicle; must possess a current, unrestricted driver's license.
