Job Details

We are seeking an exceptional leader to serve as the Chair for the Department of Surgery, and to help build the department as a central component of a world-class institution for teaching, research, and clinical care. This vibrant community recently celebrated the grand opening of its medical school and welcomed the inaugural class of medical students in 2014. The new medical school is a collaboration involving one of the largest universities in the country and the community’s two award-winning teaching hospitals. It represents an exciting opportunity to work with two outstanding medical centers and to create a model for academic and clinical integration. The school of medicine is among only a few U.S. medical schools in several decades to be built from the ground up, thanks to the support and commitment of extraordinary partners who have helped establish the foundation for this new medical school.

The two hospital partners are recognized nationally for innovation and quality, and have provided undergraduate and graduate medical education for more than 40 years. Of equal importance, the university ranks among the 50 largest colleges and universities, and among the top 100 national public doctoral universities in the U.S. and thus is able to forge a great partnership with these exceptional health systems. This remarkable collaboration, coupled with innovative approaches to medical education and passion for achieving excellence, position this school of medicine to be not just among the newest medical schools, but among the best medical schools in the country. The institution offers the full continuum of undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education. The new school of medicine is a privately-owned medical school supported by private gifts, clinical revenue, research activity, student tuition, and endowment income.

The Department Chair will build collaborative relationships and grow innovative programs, particularly in sub-specialty areas; continue to recruit an outstanding faculty and staff; and expand and build upon the partnerships in this uniquely pivotal venture. The successful Department Chair candidate will possess a medical degree from an accredited medical school, be board certified in General Surgery, and in their respective sub-specialty, if applicable, and be eligible for appointment as an Associate or Full Professor, and have a substantial record of leadership and achievement in academic medicine, medical education, and medical research.

While this new school of medicine is a new venture, it is important to note that excellent surgical programs are well established at both of the teaching hospitals in this community. This affords the opportunity to develop a collaborative partnership, anchored in education and research, which helps shape clinical practice for the future.

The Chair must demonstrate the ability to effectively steward department resources; understand, appreciate, and guide the development of training and research programs; establish productive working relationships with university administrators, faculty, staff, students and alumni; effectively support the distinct academic and clinical partnerships; and be able to represent the department and medical school in the various regional and national communities.
