Genetic Counselor Openings

Geisinger Health System is one of the nation’s largest integrated health care systems serving more than 3 million residents throughout 45 counties in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. We are recruiting skilled genetic counselors to join our dedicated team at our headquarters campus in Danville, PA, and in Harrisburg and Scranton, PA, and in Atlantic City, NJ.

The physician-led Geisinger system is comprised of approximately 30,000 employees, including more than 20 genetic counselors, nearly 1,600 employed physicians, 12 hospital campuses, two research centers and a 510,000-member health plan.

Our pioneering MyCode Community Health Initiative is a genomic precision medicine project including a system-wide biobank. Key features include:

•A recruitment goal of 250,000 Geisinger patients;

•Use of a broad opt-in consent that includes rights for re-contact, longitudinal access to medical records and samples, and return and placement of clinical results in the medical record;

•Approximately 60,000 of the 110,000 consented participants have had their exomes sequenced to date, creating a rich and growing field of data for research.

•Geisinger’s electronic health record system (EPIC) has been in place since 1996, providing up to 20 years of digitally accessible medical histories. The average for current MyCode participants is 14 years.

•Substantial research aimed at identifying or confirming new pathogenic genes, searching for actively “protective” genes and new drug development and translation of these results into clinical care is ongoing;

•A clinical genomic infrastructure has been developed at Geisinger Health System to return medically actionable clinical results to MyCode research participants. This infrastructure may serve as a model for others.

Starting with job offers dated February 1, 2012 and after, Geisinger Health System will no longer hire applicants who use tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars and chewing or smokeless tobacco. Applicants will be screened for nicotine as part of the pre-employment physical process. Nicotine will be part of the urine drug screen. Applicants who test positive for nicotine will not be offered employment. Applicants who test positive may re-apply for jobs with Geisinger in six months.
