Temple University School of Medicine, Department of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery seeks clinical Academic Pulmonologists to join our team. Unlike any other academic department in the country, the newly created Department of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery is composed of physicians and scientists from a variety of disciplines focused on the treatment of lung disease, including pulmonary and critical care medicine, allergy, thoracic surgery, lung transplant surgery, sleep medicine, diagnostic imaging and interventional thoracic radiology, pulmonary pathology, and clinical and scientific research and medical education. This unique multidisciplinary center provides synergy for cutting-edge therapies and novel basic and clinical research and educational activities that span the continuum of medical and surgical care of patients with common to rare lung disorders.

The Department of Thoracic Medicine and Surgery currently sees over 50,000 patients annually. Clinical services include nine inpatient services (medical respiratory intensive care, cardiothoracic surgical intensive care, lung transplantation, high dependency respiratory care unit, chronic respiratory failure unit), in-house 24-hour attending/fellow intensive care coverage, 24/7 consultation services, invasive procedures unit (conventional and advanced bronchoscopy: EBUS, electromagnetic navigation, bronchial thermoplasty investigational bronchoscopic lung reduction, airway dilation and stenting, pleuroscopy, transthoracic needle aspirates, and video-assisted thorascopic and robotic surgery), and our rapidly growing lung transplantation.

We perform over 3,000 sleep studies and 15,000 pulmonary function and exercise tests annually. Research activities include over 25 active NIH clinical device and pharmaceutical industry trials. We have led and designed several sentinel trials in the areas of COPD, emphysema, respiratory failure, and pulmonary fibrosis. Our Lung Tissue Bank includes over 600 lung specimens and our Center for Inflammation and Research (CILR) includes six physicians and six doctorates who perform translational research in collaboration with the clinical teams.

We are in the process of expanding critical care coverage at Temple University and affiliated hospitals to provide universal 24/7 ICU coverage. Additionally, we will be expanding the lung transplantation and ECMO programs. Expansion of lung cancer, asthma, emphysema, sleep, pulmonary hypertension, IPF, and COPD are also underway, and we have additional plans to expand our Advanced Clinical Lung Research programs and expand our center for Digital Health RemoteCare.
