DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVISION OF PULMONARY SCIENCES AND CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE

Overview

The Division is internationally renowned for its clinical and research programs described below. In addition, as the largest pulmonary research and training program in the world, the Division is also internationally recognized for its role in producing leaders in pulmonary and critical care medicine. The Division has trained approximately 17% of all academic pulmonary physicians in this country who are currently practicing. The Division consists of over 100 faculty located in six hospitals and two research institutes. These include University of Colorado Hospital, Denver Veterans Administration Hospital, Denver Health, National Jewish Health, and Centura Health/St. Anthony’s Medical Center. The Division Mission is to develop the next generation of leaders in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine through its transformative research, comprehensive career development, and world-class care. The Division Vision is to be the source of superior healthcare through innovative research and education.

Clinical Activities

Building on a long history of outstanding clinical programs, the Division has partnered with University of Colorado Health System to develop the newly formed Center for Lungs and Breathing (CLB). The goal of the CLB is to provide compassionate and high quality care in a multidisciplinary environment through innovative clinical, education, and research programs. The Center was established to coordinate multi-disciplinary efforts of Pulmonary, Allergy, Radiology, ENT, and thoracic surgery in the most comprehensive and patient centered way to diagnose and treat all respiratory, ENT, and related conditions. The expectation and commitment is to develop this Center into one of the premier comprehensive set of programs in the country specializing in respiratory conditions. Areas of expertise and focus within The Center for Lungs and Breathing will include: Bronchiectasis, Asthma, Allergy, Airway Inflammation, Emphysema, COPD, Advanced Lung Disease, Interstitial Lung Disease, Lung and other Thoracic Cancer (prevention, detection, and interventional pulmonology procedures), Head and Neck Cancer (prevention, detection, and interventional ENT procedures), Lung Transplantation for Advanced Lung Disease, Sinus and Nasal Disease (Rhinology), Disorders of the upper airway (Laryngology), Clinical Immunology, and Sleep Medicine. The CLB exemplifies the multidisciplinary nature of the Division’s approach to care rather than traditional “siloed” approach. The CLB offers key opportunities for growth of the Division. The Division has important clinical activities at associated institutions, particularly Denver Health and the Denver Veteran’s administration hospital.

Education

The Division has a key role in education at every level of training and across a number of disciplines. In particular, the Division is active in teaching medical students and internal medicine residents as well as allied health providers. The cornerstone of the Division educational effort is the University of Colorado Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Training Program supported by a T32 grant, now in its 38th year. The goal of the fellowship program is to train the future leaders in academic Pulmonary and Critical Care, including research, clinical care, and medical education. The fellowship has been greatly successful throughout the years; however, to enhance education and training and to incorporate feedback from our current fellows, the Division is currently performing a restructuring of the program. With that in mind the Division is discussing potential changes in rotations, didactic sessions, and leadership structure. Given the size of the fellowship, six fellows per year, and of the division, the new structure of the fellowship may resemble those of a Department of Medicine with Associate Program Directors in several domains: Clinical Research, Basic Science Research, Recruitment, Clinical Service, and Education. New areas of training that are being considered include health outcomes research and medical education. This restructuring is expected to take several years and provides an opportunity for a new division head to develop the fellowship program of the future. The division places great emphasis on career development and provides guidance for fellows choosing different career paths. The fellowship benefits greatly from strong academic ties with National Jewish Health, Denver Health, and the Veterans Hospital.

Research

An integral part of what makes the Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine the number one division in the country is its exceptional performance and emphasis on research. Faculty members are Principal Investigators on many grants sponsored by the National Institutes of Health as well as other funding sources. The Division has great resources in support of this research and it is part of a vibrant scientific community and environment within the University of Colorado. In particular, there are a large number of core and specialized laboratories and facilities to support investigators. The division again benefits greatly from its research partnerships with National Jewish, Denver Health and the Veterans Administration Hospital. When all sources of research funding are considered, division research efforts are supported by more than $70 million per year.

Areas of research strength of the Division include: 1) Lung Injury and Repair, with specific focus on acute lung injury (ALI), and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF); 2) Pulmonary Vascular Diseases, including both adult and pediatric presentations of disease; 3) Airway Biology encompassing asthma and the continuum of COPD and Lung Cancer; and 4) Host Defense and Immunology with a focus on granulomatous lung diseases and infectious lung diseases. Each area supports clinical, translational, and basic research programs. A number of research groups have relationships with the medical device/pharmaceutical community that brings access to novel therapies.
