The North Shore-LIJ Health System Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine seeks a qualified M.D. or M.D., Ph.D. physician who will direct the Division of Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine for the North Shore-LIJ Health System.  The Senior Director will have direct oversight over Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine services at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH, 804 beds) and Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJMC, 726 beds), and will provide system-wide leadership for blood product and transfusion medicine services in the 17 other hospitals in the health system (3 tertiary hospitals, 12 community hospitals; over 6,000 licensed beds total) and two non-system hospitals, in coordination with local site medical directors.  Collectively, in 2014 over 61,000 units of red blood cells and over 11,000 single donor platelet units were administered system-wide.  Over 1,100 therapeutic pheresis procedures were performed by the 6 Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine-certified subspecialists in the health system.  The division supports robust tertiary care clinical programming in medical and surgical oncology, cardiothoracic surgery, trauma-1 surgery, orthopaedic surgery, transplantation, obstetrics, and pediatrics.

In this leadership role, the senior director will be responsible for the following:

  • Provide visible and accessible leadership to health system leadership, medical and nursing staff, and hospital leadership for the delivery of high quality patient care, while maintaining effective practices for utilization of blood products and directing the compliance and regulatory activities of Blood Bank services.
  • Serve both as a resource and as a leader in efforts to standardize transfusion medicine operations across the system and maximize the quality and safety of patient care
  • Be a faculty member of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, an integrated department across the system.

Required Qualifications include:

  • Board Certification in Clinical Pathology (CP, with joint AP/CP certification preferred); accredited fellowship training in Transfusion Medicine (to include stem cell retrieval and apheresis) with Board certification in Transfusion Medicine
  • A minimum of 5 years post-fellowship experience, preferably with at least 2 years as Director or Associate Director of a major Blood Bank program.
  • The individual should have demonstrated leadership and management abilities, including experience in support of oncology, hematology, trauma, pediatric, obstetric, and transplantation programs.
  • The individual will be expected to support the education of physicians-in-training, and an academic background with demonstrated academic accomplishments is desirable.

Salary Disclosure

Full-time clinical base compensation at Northwell Health ranges from $125K to $750K, which is impacted by various factors, including but not limited to physician specialty, level of experience, quality of care, academic accomplishments, patient experience and productivity. The base compensation range listed is a good faith determination of potential base compensation at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future.
