FACULTY POSITIONS - Section Head, Breast Oncology

The Division of Hematology and Oncology, Department of Medicine, and the Comprehensive Cancer Center in the School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seek an outstanding academic physician with expertise in breast oncology as Section Head in Breast Oncology. The applicant will possess leadership skills and should be an accomplished clinician and academician with a strong research commitment in breast oncology. The successful candidate would also be nominated to be the O'Neal-Sokol Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama Endowed Chair. UAB seeks to develop its Breast Oncology Program to become the recognized national leader and is prepared to invest the resources needed. The Section Head will be committed to a leadership role in furthering and enhancing the academic and clinical development of the Breast Oncology program, providing exemplary patient care in an integrated manner, developing a strong portfolio of clinical trials to advance the care of breast cancer patients, and promoting clinical and translational research in breast cancer.

The Section Head will oversee delivery of clinical services and elevate the research mission within the UAB Breast Health Center, in collaboration with the other faculty members of the Division, and Comprehensive Cancer Center. The UAB Breast Health Center is a leader in the diagnosis and treatment of both benign breast problems and breast cancer, and has earned full accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. The UAB Breast Health Center provides patients with comprehensive, state-of-the-art treatment options and follow-up care, supported by an outstanding multidisciplinary 18-physician team of radiation oncologists and surgeons with expertise in evaluating and managing breast cancer. This full-time appointment will be at the Associate or Full Professor level. Rank and tenure status to be determined commensurate with experience. Applicants must have an MD degree, and be board certified or board eligible in oncology.

Successful applicants will join one of the most prestigious comprehensive cancer centers in the country. The UAB CCC was one of the first eight NCI-designated Cancer Centers in 1972 and has been continuously funded for 46 years. It is the only CCC in a four-state region in the Deep South. The UAB CCC treats over 5,000 new cancer patients annually and has an extensive effort focused on delivering cancer care and conducting research in underserved populations. The UAB CCC has over 400 members conducting outstanding cancer research in six scientific programs. Center members receive approximately $100 million in extramural cancer research funds annually, including multiple program project and large “team science” grants. The UAB CCC has 12 grant-supported cores, 9 of which are institutional shared resource facilities. A robust clinical trial infrastructure currently supports nearly 200 cancer clinical trials. A robust environment of outstanding interdisciplinary programs includes an NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award, which supports translational research and synergizes with the UAB CCC.
