The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University Medical Center is seeking applicants for a full-time faculty position primarily providing electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and pharmacotherapy to adults, with a secondary emphasis on research and/or education. Candidates are required to have:

·         An MD or MD / PhD

·         Board certification in General Psychiatry

·         Demonstrated success and expertise in ECT and pharmacotherapy for complex patients with mood disorders

·         Minimum of 3 years of successful clinical leadership experience

Clinical services will occur within hospital settings using a multi-disciplinary team-based approach. Specifically, the position entails the provision of inpatient and outpatient ECT, an opportunity for leadership within the ECT service, outpatient pharmacotherapy for treatment-resistant depression and other complex presentations with mood disorders, clinical supervision, and the possibility of research. Although this is not primarily a research-focused position, we also invite applicants to apply for the position with an established line of research related to ECT and an interest in providing leadership, clinical services and supervision in the ECT Program.

The Duke ECT Program, in continuous operation since 1940, has a longstanding history of success across clinical services, education, and research. The program has been substantively involved in the development of many innovations in ECT practice and receives local, regional, and national clinical referrals. Many national experts in ECT were trained at the Duke ECT Program, and the program has had an important role in the development of national clinical guidelines regarding ECT. Over the years, numerous research studies have been conducted by Duke ECT Program faculty generating over 150 scientific publications. The Duke ECT Program has exceptionally strong training programs in ECT, including a highly successful PGY3/4 psychiatry resident elective and a week-long ECT Visiting Fellowship course that is carried out throughout the year and has provided ECT training to over a thousand U.S. and international psychiatrists.

This position is a faculty appointment with rank and potential leadership roles commensurate with the applicant's background, experience, and accomplishments.

The primary faculty appointment will be in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences with the possibility of dual appointments with one or more other appropriate departments. Duke University offers a rich intellectual and scientific environment facilitated by several institutes, including, for example, the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences, Duke Translational Research Institute, Duke Institute for Health Innovation, and the Duke Clinical Research Institute, all of which are designed to promote interdisciplinary research.
