Search for the Chair, Department of Surgery & Surgeon in Chief

Oregon Health & Science University - School of Medicine

Portland, Oregon

The Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) School of Medicine invites applications and nominations for the Chair of the Department of Surgery. The Department counts over 100 faculty in nine divisions and is unified by a deep culture of excellence, collegiality, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The Department runs one of largest residency programs in the country and has been at the forefront of medical education and training and clinical excellence. The Chair of Surgery is a prominent leader in the School of Medicine and also the health system; as OHSU pursues important new affiliations with health systems in the region, the Chair plays a key strategic role in building surgical services across the partnerships.

Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Chair will lead all aspects of the Department. S/he is responsible for recruitment, development, and retention of diverse faculty. The Chair will foster opportunities to expand research across all Divisions, with a focus on interdisciplinary and collaborative team-based scholarship. S/he will champion the work of the Department by promoting partnerships across the School of Medicine, with other divisions and departments, affiliate hospitals, and external stakeholders.

The Department of Surgery Chair will be appointed Surgeon in Chief and will be responsible for ensuring the quality, effectiveness, safety, and efficiency of patient care for all surgical services delivered at OHSU Hospital and Clinics including Doernbecher Children's Hospital. The Surgeon in Chief acts as a representative for all surgical providers to Health System leadership and the School of Medicine maintaining relationships that are effective and collaborative inside and outside of the surgical program structure.

Ranked among the nation's top 20 biomedical research institutions for innovation, OHSU is a thriving, fully integrated and aligned academic health center. In 2017, OHSU's operating budget reached $2.8 billion, research award dollars totaled $410 million, and $131 million in philanthropic gifts pushed the University's capital campaign (launched in 2015) to more than $1.5 billion. OHSU's physical growth can be seen in the new Robertson Life Sciences Building, a new School of Public Health, and a rural health-focused campus. Construction of three additional buildings will be completed in 2018, including the Knight Cancer Institute Research Building, the Center for Health & Healing South, and the Rood Family Pavilion.

OHSU seeks an outstanding MD or MD/PhD clinician with substantial leadership experience, a record of building research, and the ability to sustain partnerships that advance the academic, research, and clinical missions of the Department. The successful candidate will be an accomplished leader who understands current trends in healthcare and medical education; wants to make an impact on surgical training; is interested in innovation and in preparing leaders; values research; and is committed to diversity, inclusion, and eliminating inequities in healthcare outcomes.

OHSU has engaged Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm, to assist in the search. All nominations and applications should be sent in confidence to: Philip Jaeger (pjaeger@imsearch.com) or Randi Alberry (ralberry@imsearch.com).
