Chief, Laboratory of Epidemiology and Population Sciences  (Senior Investigator - Research)

The National Institute on Aging (NIA), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is recruiting for a Senior Investigator (Research) who will serve as Chief of the Laboratory of Epidemiology and Population Sciences (LEPS), in the Intramural Research Program (IRP), in Baltimore, Maryland.

The LEPS is currently comprised of three (3) Sections. The mission of LEPS is to describe the complexity of disease in a wide age range of diverse population groups, and to identify and test etiologic and predictive hypotheses about health behaviors and conditions in these populations. LEPS provides leadership in the development of approaches and techniques that maximize the yield from epidemiologic studies of aging populations. The mission also highlights mentoring the next generation of leaders in the field of the epidemiology of aging, health disparities, and behavior.

The tenure-eligible position requires a PhD or MD (or MD, PhD) or equivalent doctoral degree in Epidemiology or related fields with long term experience handling multiple epidemiological studies. The position requires research experience in aging or age-related disease, with particular focus on the pathways that lead to the development of physical and cognitive decline with aging. An ideal candidate would have expertise working with large epidemiological studies including large databases of “omics”. In addition, use of big data, especially those available in ‘public’ domains would be highly desirable. An ideal candidate would also have a strong track record in developing translational research from the findings of epidemiological studies, and in developing testable hypotheses about biological pathways for causal associations emerging from epidemiological studies. Applicants should have a strong record of peer-reviewed funding in the aforementioned areas and an outstanding publication record, including articles in the fields relevant to this position.

The preferred applicant should have the ability to implement and collaborate in multidisciplinary research and should provide evidence of having the ability to collaborate across and between institutions, nationally and internationally. In addition, experience in the management of personnel and complex budgets is desired.

Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments. A full Civil Service package of benefits (including retirement, health, life and long-term care insurance, Thrift Savings Plan, etc.) is available. NIA may be able to pay relocation expenses. All employees of the Federal Government are subject to the conflict of interest statutes and regulations, including the Standards of Ethical Conduct. Additional information regarding the NIA, IRP is available at the following website: www.irp.nia.nih.gov.

To apply, please send cover letter, curriculum vitae, and bibliography (including a description of mentoring and outreach activities, especially those involving women and persons from other groups which are underrepresented in biomedical research), statement of research interest, and three letters of recommendation to: Jamie Hertzfelt, Intramural Program Specialist; Office of the Scientific Director, Vacancy # NIA-IRP-18-02, National Institute on Aging, NIH Biomedical Research Center, 251 Bayview Boulevard, Suite 100, Room 04C232, Baltimore, MD 21224 or e-mail niairpjobs@mail.nih.gov. The first review of applications will begin on or about October 15, 2018, but applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
