UTMB has a long history of advancing health sciences education, research and patient care. We were the first Academic Health Center in Texas and Galveston is home to the state's first schools of medicine. UTMB was established in 1891 and is comprised of four schools and three institutes. The Medical School enrolls 230 students per class and 1 in 6 Texas physicians have trained at UTMB.

DIRECTOR, DIVISION OF PALLIATIVE CARE

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) Division of Palliative Care provides comprehensive and leading edge clinical care to the people of the State of Texas, and regionally to our patients in Galveston and Brazoria counties and Southeast Houston metropolitan area. Its founding Division Director, Dr. Lee Grumbles, has led the Palliative Care Program at UTMB since 2008 and is retiring.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE DIRECTOR OF PALLIATIVE CARE

  • Has a clear vision for advancing the missions of the Division of Palliative Care and the organization’s commitments to gender equity and diversity.
  • Responsible for oversight of palliative care clinical services, personnel, budgeting, scheduling, productivity, and program development.
  • Responsible for quality monitoring and improvement of palliative care services.
  • Works with leadership to ensure excellent and appropriate care at all clinical and hospital sites.
  • Integrate Divisional activities with community Hospice companies/providers
  • Attend on the inpatient palliative care services.
  • Lead regular multidisciplinary palliative care service meetings
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for education of trainees and mentoring of junior faculty
  • Recruits, retains, and mentors Division Faculty and mid-level providers
  • Works collaboratively with Health System leadership and administration to grow Palliative care services and programs at UTMB and in collaboration with its strategic partners.
  • Foster an environment of scholarship and inquiring.
  • Demonstrate appropriate understanding of and enthusiasm for each of the three missions of an academic medical organization.
  • Report to the Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • MD or equivalent with Board certification in Palliative Care.
  • Demonstrated clinical excellence in palliative care
  • National recognition in palliative care as evidenced by involvement in academic societies at a national or international level
  • Eligibility for an unrestricted Texas medical license
  • Track record of sustained scholarship
  • Education, coursework, or equivalent experience in management of a clinical enterprise
  • Three years of post-fellowship palliative care experience

COMPENSATION

Compensation arrangements are competitive and commensurate with both experience and achievement.
