Henry Ford Health System, one of the world’s most distinguished academic medical centers, announces a search for the Department Chair of Urology within the Vattikuti Urology Institute (VUI).

The Department of Urology at Henry Ford has strong local, regional, national, and international recognition for excellence in clinical care, clinical and translational research, and education. Known for its pioneering work in robot urological surgery, the Department has performed over 7,000 robotic prostate procedures and 2000 kidney/bladder robotic procedures.

The Urology Department currently provides care at two Hospitals and two outpatient clinic sites with the intent of supporting the continued expansion and integration of Urological Medicine in a collaborative and fully integrated model when possible. The Department consists of 15 surgeons, five researchers, five APPs, and over 30 support staff in addition to 10-12 residents and 4-6 fellows. The Department has over 800 publications and 300 presentations over the last five years. The Chair will work closely with clinicians, Department of Medicine Division Heads, and other Chairs and leaders within Henry Ford Medical Group and Henry Ford Health System to develop and implement best practices for inpatient and outpatient care. The Chair will be a practicing member of the Urology Department.

We are actively recruiting a physician leader to continue our tradition of success!  The ideal candidate will be a leading clinician, educator, and scholar, who supports research and education within the specialty and subspecialized department and who can work collaboratively within an integrated, multispecialty organization. Strong leadership competencies are key success elements for the role. Furthermore, the Chair should have a strong academic background and able to build on a strong research enterprise in areas such as clinical trials, quality improvement, translational medicine, precision medicine, and population health. The Chair is also responsible for advancing the medical education mission and ensuring a robust, innovative residency and fellowship program and an environment of scholarly inquiry.

Qualifications

  • An MD or DO degree, BC/BE in American Board of Urology, and an unrestricted state medical license.
  • Minimum 4-6 years of experience in a leadership role within an academic institution.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to advance and develop a superior clinical service.
  • Able to function effectively and drive the creation and management of projects and programs to successful outcomes in a highly matrixed organization.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and presentation skills for both clinical and non-clinical audiences, in group settings or one-on-one.
  • Expertise in establishing physician relationships combined with the ability to manage an interdisciplinary team while appreciating and fostering collegial and peer participation from all disciplines.
  • Effective supervisory skills, including clinical mentoring and coaching expertise.
  • Advocate for organizational values and commitment to gender equity and diversity.
  • Personal characteristics of integrity, maturity, and honesty aligned with the Mission and Values of the Henry Ford Health System.
  • A genuine excitement related to working in an integrated system that is redefining the way health care delivery should evolve. 

Overview

Henry Ford Health System is comprised of hospitals, medical centers, and one of the nation's largest group practices, the Henry Ford Medical Group, which includes more than 1,300 physicians practicing in over 40 specialties. The System's flagship, Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, is a Level 1 Trauma Center recognized for clinical excellence in cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, sports medicine, multi-organ transplants, and cancer treatment. Henry Ford Health System has one of the largest medical education enterprises in the United States with six hospitals and 30+ ambulatory centers throughout Southeastern Michigan. One-third of all physicians in Michigan received training at Henry Ford.  The System sponsors 97 graduate training programs, including 62 ACGME accredited residency and fellowship programs. In 2016, HFHS trained more than 1,300 residents and fellows and more than 1,200 medical students in its four ACGME accredited sponsoring institutions. Henry Ford Hospital currently sponsors 660 residents and fellows, hosts 150 medical students a month, and has over 100 full-time medical students from Wayne State University School of Medicine.

HFHS/HFH also provides training and support for a variety of allied health careers including pharmacy, dietetics, diagnostic medical sonography, and radiologic technology. HFHS is also in the top 6 percent of National Institutes of Health-funded institutions. In 2016, HFHS research funding reached a 100-year high with $82.5 million in external grants and contracts for research.
