Works under the general professional direction of the Chief, Department of Care Aviation Medicine and/or Deputy Commander for Clinical Services; work is performed with considerable freedom from technical supervision. Consultation in a specialty area is available on request.

The patient care duties involve the full range of requirements established by appropriate Army regulations and Lyster Army Health Clinic, Fort Rucker, Alabama.

Duties require recognizing cases which require referral or consultation with specialists. Referrals, emergency treatment, and some treatment procedures are accepted as technically accurate. Quality assurance reports, various regulatory inspections, and the degree of patient satisfaction constitute review of work.

1. Provides medical supervision to health care delivery personnel assigned to the Aviation Medicine clinics. This includes allied health professionals and enlisted medical specialists assigned to the services. Provides medical supervision for the coordination of care obtained from outside civilian and non-civilian hospitals/nursing homes. Plans work, preparing schedules and establishing priorities. Assigns work based on priorities, selective consideration of difficulty and requirements of case and capabilities of subordinate staff. Evaluates performance of assigned personnel, providing advice, counsel or instruction to individuals on both work performance and administrative matters. Identifies developmental and training needs of staff. 35%

2. Provides routine care for chronic medical problems within scope of practice and scope of care for the Aviation Medicine Department. Care is generally rendered in the outpatient clinics on a scheduled basis, but, to meet patient needs, they may need to be walked in or added to the physician's schedule. Provides care, advice and referral coordination via telephone and e-mail as appropriate. Meets targets for productivity established for the department. Performs military specific medical tasks, including (but not limited to) periodic physical exams, temporary and permanent profiles, fitness-for-duty evaluations, medical boards, flight physicals and aeromedical summaries. Performs procedures within scope of practice and scope of care for the Aviation Medicine Department. Physician must have or willing to be trained to attain a working knowledge of computer systems which are required in the performance of daily tasks (Composite Health Care System (CHCS), Microsoft Access). Provides diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic services to patients primarily in the Aviation Medicine. As a physician, is responsible for examining, diagnosing, and prescribing courses of treatment in cases of illness and injuries. Subject to provide on-call coverage as needed in support of Aviation Medicine Department and his specialty service. Duties require incumbent to be board eligible in Aviation Medicine or Family Practice, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified, and be able to perform said protocols outlined therein in a manner which is unsupervised. Incumbent must also be able to communicate those skills and knowledge to other health professionals and paraprofessionals in time of need. 35%

3. Manages the medical aspects of the Aviation Safety Program by conducting lectures and classes for aviation personnel, conducting flight line inspections, observing, examining and treating patients under flight conditions and supervising the fitting and use of personnel safety equipment. Initiates accident investigations to include duties as medical officer on accident investigation/flight safety boards. Serves as flight surgeon on call with duties including above mentioned accident investigation, to include irregular hours such as weekends, nights, and/or holidays as deemed appropriate. 20%

4. Must understand the medical mission necessary to support the United States Army Aeromedical Center and Fort Rucker. Works closely with the Performance Improvement Program to reduce patient complaints and enhance the image of medical services available. Coordinates with ancillary care areas, i.e. Radiology, Pathology, Pharmacy, Nutritional Care, Rehabilitation Services and Occupational Health. Participates in training courses at the hospital as a participant and/or instructor. 5%

  • Must be U.S. Citizen.
  • Degree: Successful completion of a degree that is approved by a recognized professional accrediting organization at the time the curriculum was completed, and (2) the clinical affiliation requirements prescribed by the school.
  • Licensure: Applicants must pass a State-administered national examination.  Applicants must have an active, current registration or equivalent from a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • Certification: Current certification from a U.S. nationally recognized credentialing body.
  • Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: evaluating physical therapy patients and implementing physical therapy treatment.
  • This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Other Requirements:

  • Personnel Security Investigation required.
  • These positions require a Childcare Background Check (CNACI).
  • These positions are a Testing Designated Positions (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Tentatively selected applicants will be required to sign DA Form 5019 requiring participation in random drug urinalysis testing. A job offer to an applicant who is a not a current employee will be withdrawn if the applicant refuses to be tested. Applicants with verified positive test results shall be refused employment. Applications from such individuals shall not be considered for employment for a period of 6 months from the date of the test results.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
  • Two year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • These positions are subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for appointment to this position will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • A pre-placement physical examination may be required.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
