About the community:

Hilo is the county seat of the Big Island of Hawaii, an area boasting waterfalls, rainforests and blooming gardens. On average, there are 175 sunny days per year in Hilo with a July temperature around 83 degrees, and a January low of 64. The northeastern coast is the wetter, rainforest side of the island. Downtown Hilo is vibrant and family-friendly with museums, art galleries, local unique shopping, and the Hilo Farmers Market.  Living in Hilo is considered one of the best places in the world for fresh fish, grass fed beef and tropical fruits and vegetables. Top industries in Hilo include tourism, government, education and health services, professional and business services, and trade/transportation/utilities.  The University of Hawaii at Hilo offers doctoral degrees in Nursing, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacy. Hilo International Airport offers convenient flight options.

Across the island, about an hour and a half’s drive, you’ll find Kailua Kona, often referred to as either “Kailua” or “Kona” by locals. A second international airport on the island is located here, Kona International Airport. The climate on the Kona side of the island is dry and sunny with white sand beaches perfect for sunbathing, snorkeling and swimming.

6/6/18 update: Despite recent volcanic activity on the island, all operations are normal.  The closest area affected by the eruption is 20 miles from Hilo, and the volcanic activity has had no direct impact on the town of Hilo and most of Hawaii Island. That includes our airports, harbors and the majority of roads.  Please refer to official sources such as the USGS website for current information.
